Indrajeet Raval
Hello, Can I use cakewalk INS instruments in light weight vst and use in Gig Performer. Is it possible and through which vst. Thanks.
abacab
Which instrument?
Promidi
Sorry I don’t understand the question. What is a “cakewalk INS instrument”. There are Cakewalk INS files which are Instrument Definition files that are used with Cakewalk external equipment. Did something get lost in translation perhaps? David Jameson
You can use Instrument Definition Files in Gig Performer - but they have nothing to do with VSTs. You can associate an INS with a MIDI Out block. MIDI Out blocks are designed to communicate with external hardware synths and if an INS is available for the synth you are using, that will work. Indrajeet Raval
These .ins instruments, which can be mapped in "Preferences-Instrument".
Byron Dickens
Those are not instruments. Those are instrument definitions. https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013272/Instrument-Definitions
abacab
The *.ins files are intended for use in Cakewalk. They are basically a list in text file format of the banks and patches included in a defined MIDI instrument. "Instrument definitions are a powerful feature that make it easier for you to find the banks, patches, and controllers of your MIDI instruments. An instrument definition is a file that contains the names of the banks, patches, note names, bank select method, and controllers of an instrument. Instrument definitions for many popular MIDI instruments are included with Cakewalk software."

However, INS files are text files and can be used by other programs that are able to read those INS files. Gig Performer can do this. Attached is a picture of a GP MIDI Out block intended to control a K2500 where an INS file for the Kurzweil K2500 has been loaded, thereby allowing patches to be selected by name rather than having to specify the bank select and program change numbers explicitly

But a user would still need to own the actual defined instrument in order to make use of the definition files. The OP asked if he could use "instruments outside Cakewalk", so it wasn't initially clear what he was asking about. A program that has support for Cakewalk .ins files can make use of them, as Gig Performer does.
David Jameson
Oh - I see -- yes, the question was ambiguous - I just assumed the OP meant he wanted to use INS files, but he didn't want to use Cakewalk itself and since INS files were designed for physical instruments, I assumed he had the physical instruments already. abacab
No worries! Cakewalk has a global user base, so not everyone is a native English speaker, and sometimes we have to ask for clarifications. Not to be rude or anything, but just to ensure we better understand the specific question so answers are relevant to the OP.
