Imported video shows as black screen (amended)

I have opened a new project and want to set up some music to match it. Trouble is, the Video Preview is a black screen and "Video Thumbnails are currently hidden" is shown in the track thumbs pane. The video plays fine in VLC player.

Any help appreciated.

 

EDIT: I tried to drop the video into the project. When I actually used the menu structure to import it, a video track was created and the video showed.
