Audio Waves - just shapes and muted?

Can someone pls tell me what this should be? I m recording in comping mode. I set the punch in and punch out markers, place the marker in front of the recording area and i press "R" to start the record. I get 2 different behaviours..

1. The Area which should be overwritten stays loud, so that i hear it while i´m recording a new take over it. After that i could choose between those 2 takes like it should be

2. With pressing "R" the wave-forms in the recording area change their appearing from "filled" to "just the shape" (as seen in the pic). The just-shape-area of the wave-form is now muted. This is helpful for recording another take over it, but otherwise i dont know how to unmute them again if i dont want the new recorded take.

Can someone tell me something about this "Feature"? How can i unmute these shape-areas again? What causes these different 2 behaviours?

On my computer the "K" key mutes and unmutes. There is also a tool to swipe and mute or unmute.

Yeah its the Mute is the way to go. Drag it across the top half of the clip, lets the shapes get filled again!!!
