Piano roll, the commands are the same but the mouse-click is used differently.

Piano roll, 

Select tool = Left Click 

But, Smart tool = Right Click

Why not make it the same, do the left click like other programs.

Right-click to select is different from normal programs.

I gather you're referring to selecting multiple notes by click+drag to lasso because left-click with the Smart tool will select a single note.  Left-click and drag is dedicated to entering and editing notes so it's not available for lassoing. You get used to right+click and drag pretty quickly.
