This was (is?) a Reaktor gadget that is now available as VST3/AU.  On sale for $17.99 until Oct 31 at ADSR, then $25. 30 day free full function trial available.

Ad copy:

Hexcel works with any synth that accepts MIDI

Hexcel can work in any DAW and with any synth that accepts MIDI input.
Hexcel is a fast and simple way to create profoundly creative, complex sequenced melodies and chords.

Looks like the original Reaktor ensemble is still available, for five bucks:

https://www.adsrsounds.com/product/software/hexcel/

Interesting that the URL in Brian's post above specifies just "hexcel", but the equivalent URL for the VST/AU version under software/ is hexcel-2:

https://www.adsrsounds.com/product/software/hexcel-2/

The new one's definitely prettier, though they don't otherwise seem to be calling it "version 2", so I wonder if there are any functional differences.

Is this a reworked version of a Reaktor Synth? That's the only thing that comes up when I searched for videos on the VST

It is, though it's technically a MIDI generator as opposed to a traditional synth. There was a short blurb about it (the original Reaktor ensemble) on NI's site a while back:

Hmm... I'm looking at the websites side-by-side.  The interfaces look the same to me.  I'm guessing they're the same.

Interesting concept.  I had not seen the Reaktor version before.  After playing with the demo for a bit, I think it really needs about an eight slot pattern memory per patch.  It is rather fun and easy to cook up variations once you have something you like, but saving and recalling them with file explorer is a pain.

No. Another shortcoming.  No MIDI save or drag/drop.  You need to record the output.

Thanks for mentioning this.  I wonder if Melda's MTuner would be a good tool to use with Hexcel to generate MIDI (real time audio to MIDI) perhaps using a very stable (pitch-wise) waveform.

You actually don't need to do this. Hexcel already produces MIDI which can be recorded by any DAW. Hexcel does not produce any audio. Its MIDI output is meant to be routed to another synth.

Thanks for the clarification.  I read this too quickly ? :

May have missed it somewhere in the description, but does the vst allow the pattern to be saved to a midi file?

Actually, now that I think about it, I read it before my morning coffee.     NOTE TO SELF: Drink coffee early--even on the weekends!   ?
