Split Clip tool with 3 lines?

I can't figure out what this tool is supposed to do.  It looks like it only comes up on stereo files - and only on the edge of the waveform.  If I move up to the middle of the waveform, it turns back into the normal looking split tool.

It appears only when there is multiple takes on the track. It splits all takes at once even if they're not selected. If you expand the Take Lane you'll get better understanding.

Well...that makes sense.  I didn't look at the lanes because I had no idea I had multiple lanes in that track...?
