Bagpipes!

Hi all,

No I haven't started the Xmas booze early, I just wondered if anyone could suggest a plugin for a decent bagpipe sound? My  Juno tries its best but it sounds a bit false and i have a song that needs this! Not the end of the world if I cant get one, but this forum is pretty darn good at answering strange questions like this one!

You didn't mention what type of bagpipes you wanted, but I suspect you meant traditional Scottish great highland bag pipes.  Uillean pipes have a far more mellow sound, tend not to have the drone, and may not be quite what you're after.

You could try out these ones:
  https://www.universal-piper.com/en/the-virtual-bagpipe-lab/
https://www.bigfishaudio.com/Celtic-Instruments

both which have a range of different bag pipes.

This one is free and synthetic, but doesn't too sound bad - I suspect it would sound convincing enough in a mix:  http://flowstoners.com/quilcom

That's very helpful, I'm doing a song about new Year hence the need for bagpipes!

Sorry. Was in the Coffee House.

Do you know how it came to be that way?

I made a topic in feedback that ended here and had to be moved back to feedback. I never understood how that could happen.

It differs in one is a post and the other a topic but what could the common cause be?

https://www.bigfishaudio.com/Celtic-Instruments - several formats, including Kontakt - for both Uilleann Pipes and Scottish bagpipes - not great to my ears, but good enough - plus a bunch of other instruments.

For Uilleann pipes alone, I highly recommend https://audioplugin.deals/dicky-deegans-uilleann-pipes-by-xtant-audio/. Bought them not too long ago, they were really cheap, and have been very pleased ever since. Slap a ton of delay and reverb on those, you can't go wrong.

I was told once that the intro to Steve Earls  Copperhead Road the Keyboardist used s DX7 to create the bagpipe sound. Not sure if this is true, if he did then he sure must have modified the patch. I have the  Free Dexed 1 DX7 VST and way down in Cartridge 25 sound 26 is the only Bagpipe patch I could find. Was way off.

I also found this while digging around in Plugins4free. https://plugins4free.com/plugin/3296/

It sounds great in the video demo. But I can't get any sound out of it. Maybe someone else can.

Ah yes... bagpipes. We hired a bagpiper to play at my wife's funeral a few years back, as she was half Irish (which half I'll leave unsaid). We had no idea whether bagpipes were part of Ireland's music heritage, but seemed fitting. Bagpipe tunes sound appropriately sad for a sad occassion, and along with a version of Amazing Gace, he did play a couple of wife's favorite Irish tunes like Danny Boy and Irish Eyes are Smiling at the service.

Admittedly, the bagpipes were a unique touch to the occasion, but as a long-time keyboardist, I would have to say a step in the wrong direction vis-a-vis organ or piano music.

I don't know why so many people hate on bagpipes so much. I always thought they sounded cool.

Aye laddie, off in the distance, over the deep green heather of the moor, they sound ethereal and dreamy.

But if you are in the same room with one, you'd rather be water boarded!

Isn't the folk lore of their origin was to terrify the enemy as the Highland warriors marched towards them on the battlefield? And they would have had a bunch of them.

Our small town has a Pipe Band. They are a part of many community events and actually very popular. I've often shared the stage with solo pipers and the whole group at events like the fall fair and grand openings. Two of our local drummers are also part of that.
