Can't hear virtual keyboard only while recording

Hi! Obvious novice here. I've got a MIDI track set up with the Cakewalk TTS-1 soft synth. If I press alt-0 to go to the virtual keyboard controller, I can play just fine. The moment I start recording however (by setting record=on on the track and pressing R to record) I can no longer hear the virtual controller. It records my key presses just fine: once I'm done recording I can play back what I just recorded and it's all there. It just sucks that I can't hear what I'm playing *while* I'm recording and I could swear that used to work just fine. What am I missing?

Input echo doesnt seem to work in this case, i got the same issue, sort of, i got 2 instruments going and i can hear both mixed together fine while playing, but when recording, I can only here one,  the echo buttons are both activated on both.
