Piano Roll: Velocity tail appears while drawing note

Sometimes, while I'm drawing a note in the PRV, the velocity tail appears. It's a vertical line from the beginning of the note being drawn. But this only happens sometimes, and sometimes the new note is drawn without the tail. I can't figure out why.

How does this happen, and can it be disabled? Thanks in advance

Go to the PVR views menu and check show controller pane. Then the velocity line will be down there instead of in the main view
