bluzdog
I'm about to pull the trigger on a MB Mark V 35. I'm waiting on Wildwood guitars to re-open to try some amps out. I'm on the fence about a head vs. a combo. I like the versatile, low wattage and lite weight form factor. I've been looking at other amps to consider i.e. Friedman, Diesel, Dr. Z, etc but it's usually apples and oranges vs. the MB. I have a BF Super Reverb, 70's Champ, 60s Ampeg Reverberocket, Gibson Scout and an Ampeg V-4 now. What other amps should I be looking at? Thanks Rocky

Jim Roseberry
Had a MB Badlander 50. Crunch was fantastic. Onboard Cabclone IR sounded very good The internal fan was LOUD... to the point I couldn't deal with it. Otherwise, it was a fantastic amp... and (compared to Friedman, DR-Z, ec) reasonably priced. Had a DR-Z CAZ-45. It's billed as a high-gain amp. If this makes any sense, it's extremely well built... but... (to me) just didn't have any umph (insert your favorite adjective for "balls"). I'm generally into modded-marshall (gain wise). Wanted to love the CAZ-45... but just didn't care for it. DR-Z is located here in OH, has a great reputation, etc. Wound up with a BE-100 Deluxe, Bogner Shiva, and 20th Bogner Shiva. Of course, this was during the height of Covid. What in the world was I thinking buying 50-60 pound heads? Nothing at all "practical" about them. ?
bats brew
i've always preferred heads over combos. the reasons should be obvious, but being able to connect different cabs is the main one. that, and the head is WAY easier to carry. honestly, if you like boogie, you cannot go wrong with a Mark 5, in any power range. if you like a LOT of gain, look at a Victory Kraken. there are not many 3 channel amps with multiple voicings and half power switches on the market, in THAT price range. the Bogner Ecstasy 3534 would be a good choice in the same price range. it's easy enough to browse on sweetwater... the REVV Generator 7-40 is very cool.

I bought the Revv Generator 120 mkIII (based on liking the D20 and G20 and the G2 and G3 pedals). Didn't like it at all... Probably the most disappointed I've been in any amp purchase. I'm wondering now if the amp was defective.

bats brew
that said, if i ever bought a bum amp, i'd never buy another from that company. that said, i bought my mesa boogie mark IIb in 1982, and it's still going strong, with never a fail in years of full time road work. the old boogies were built like tanks, don't know about the new ones...
