Notes input by MIDI controller played by whatever instrument I have selected

I recently got a new MIDI keyboard controller (Alesis Qmini if that's relevant), and when I record input to an instrument via this controller, then select a different instrument and play it back, the audio plays that note on both the original instrument I recorded and the one I have selected. Can someone tell me why this is, and how I can disable this?

Is each instrument set to a specific MIDI channel, rather than onmi?

That did it, thank you! It was set to omni. Why does omni work this way? If I record on track 5, why would having track 4 set to omni play that? Just curious, my problem is solved now
