500 series, what should I get?

I am looking to take the leap to some 500 series gear. I need a mic pre to start with and a chassis. Recommendations on some reasonably priced good quality mike pre and chassis? Also, should I consider used 500series gear?

Module wise, Five Fish Audio has some really good quality modules, API VPR certified and reasonably priced. You can buy all of their modules as DIY kits too, if you want.

The trick is to make sure you check it out first. See if you can plug it in and hear it work before exchanging money. The most likely problem with them would be dirty pots which you can fix with some Deoxit.

Used gear sounds better. ?

The biggest problem I've had with used gear is that when it doesn't sound like I think it should, I can't be sure if it's me or the gear (always me. ? )

Main issue with 500 gear is that you need a lunchbox to test them. If you buy a used lunchbox, how do you test it without any modules in?
