Recording process too sensitive, always redlining

Redlining on vocals even when volume turned down.  First time I have tried recording since replacing the hard drive on my Win 10 laptop.  Same mic and same audio interface as before.  Hard to see how a hard drive could cause this; I am at a loss.  Any thoughts?

Your audio settings on the PC probably got changed.

Right-click on the speaker icon, select Open Sound Settings.

In Input section click on Device Properties and turn the level down.
