First note during playback always sounds funny/distorted.

When I playback a song I have created the first note always sounds "funny" or distorted. Do you all start your songs with a blank measure or something?

Yeah, I get this sometimes.

I've never worked out why, but putting in a blank measure sorts it.

Yes, I also have a blank measure. 

Some synths or effects need time to initialise.  If a note sounds before the synths or effects has fully initialised, the note may sound strange.
