i know i can click in the to top bit (sorry forgot what its called)

but i just want to be able to click from wherever  i am on the screen.

Not all sure about Cakewalk, but many daws have a setting whether clicking in empty area would move Now time cursor.
Look for something like that.

Look under Transport shortcuts.

I don't know what is different in your settings but when I click anywhere during playback the now time jumps there but only backwards.  Doesn't seem to work for ahead.  But then I use CTRL_W to toggle the rewind to  stop in place . I always have one hand on the spacebar and the other on the mouse so if I hit the spacebar the song stops and I can click ahead. Just used to it without even realizing I do it that way. I didn't realize you COULD click ahead using the timeline, thanks for pointing that out,, a new trick.
