I used to have the full slate bundle, it's good, but the truth is, I was paying to use duplicates of a lot of what I already have from waves and other bits and pieces (IMO). I would recommend it highly to someone starting out though.

Still very much into Slate myself. 
Slate and FabFilter are my top mixing brands. Then come the special ones like SoundTheory (Gullfoss!), Wavesfactory (Spectre! TrackSpacer!) and Zynaptiq (everything). Then comes iZotope.

I still have, and use, all things branded Slate including SSD5 (and all Slate add ons) and Trigger2 (and all Slate add ons, even some 3rd party add ons).

I tried installing these when they came out and found out they required a dongle-berry.  Is that still the case, or do they work with the software manager?

Requires iLok but you can install on hard disk as opposed to dongle

I have no hardware ilok.

I redeemed the code in my ilok account, but after installing, it tells me it requires a second gen (or later) ilok for activation.

Its not allowing me to activate to the computer.

Yep, this sounds familiar. I've still got REvival and the other "free" offerings from a few years ago sitting in my iLok Manager unused...  No thanks, there are plenty of other options.
