I found this after posting.  From user Lorenz_Ambeo on KVR (off the link on the Sennheiser page):

Right..it's not "tied" but coding was for that particular mic I assume.

The Neumann KU 100 is binaural dummy head microphone using the reference head model. so the Orbit just uses the HRTF model of this reference dummy head to decode the signal to binaural audio. 

So you do not need the  KU 100 at all.
But be careful working with binaural effects: it is not stereo, so you can get phase issues in your master.
