Audio Interfaces and CbB

Hi -  Does anyone know whether an audio interface connected to a PC (i.e. Focusrite Scarlett) will become the default route for all inputs and outputs on that PC? For example if it was assigned to be used in CbB would the audio interface also provide the routing for all sounds for the other apps/programmes (Windows media player for example)?

You must go into Windows Sounds app in control panel and choose your default audio player. I disabled my on board audio so there is no choice. Things get real screwy when using Focusrite with Cakewalk and then watching YouTube, then using Premiere. I would lose audio just by switching programs and had to jump through hoops to get it back. At least that was my experience with Focusrite. I have since bought a Steinberg and everything just works. Don’t know if it was Focusrite or me,

If the Scarlett is selected in windows audio or sounds then yes you will get all sound from the computer. Not sure if this is a default once you load the Scarlett drivers. You might need to select it as your main audio source which isn't a difficult thing to do.

Things get a little more complicated if you are trying to record multiple audio sources and either make a movie or stream. For instance recording your voice and a webcam shot of you explaining a DAW while the DAW is running and still have sound to all of it. I have been using VoiceMeeter Banana for that  although there are other ways to do it.

Some of the time the different formats can confuse an audio I nterface, which is designed to stream high quality in and out of your computer, not switch seamlessly between  audio and video formats. So yes, disabling your onboard card is the easiest thing to do, but can mess with audio function of your interface when switching between games and online audio.

10 years or so ago I always got a kick on the tc forum where people bought $1700 interfaces but were disappointed that they didn’t handle porno sound as well as their onboard card.

I prefer disabling my onboard audio, and just using my audio interface for all sounds in my PC. But that seems to work best in my case if I leave the sample rate for everything set at 44,100 Hz.

Otherwise I sometimes have to fiddle when switching between DAW and Windows audio sources using the same interface, if the sources are set to different rates.

I have always used what ever interface I have hooked up for all sounds on my PC. Never had it not work. And I work in 44.1 in Cakewalk. I watch a lot of utubes and also work in Vegas Movie studio without issue.

Likewise. I wonder if it's necessary in CbB to check "Share drivers with other programs" ( like  it is in SONAR)   to make  audio work when jumping between applications.
