Chrome launches Cakewalk to play midi..?

cosmic gumbo

Question

Just today I was trying to play some random online midi files while browsing in Chrome, and every time I tried, it launched Cakewalk with the midi file loaded into a new track, ready to be played manually.

I hadn't used Cakewalk since the last few updates, but online midi files used to play in a native Chrome  midi player.

Any ideas how to stop them from  loading into Cakewalk and launching it? It's a pain, plus it creates and stores a project and file. What a mess to maintain.

Thanks for any help.

Assuming that your were not downloading the MIDI files - here's 2 Chrome extensiond that play MIDI in the browser.

If you are downloading the files with the 'Open' option - the problem is that MIDI files are now associated with Cakewalk instead of whatever app was playing them before.  If this is the case and you are using Windows 8 - 10 you can use the instructions found on the link below to re-enable the default system MIDI player:
