Alto and Bari are Eb instruments, Soprano and Tenor are Bb...so there is that craziness. Same for me Bitflipper. I'm amazed how some horn players transpose on site. I have hired a lot of horn players and I am so grateful that I can sketch out a horn arrangement and have the players read it with no problem. I do know a couple of guys who play / bring all of the saxes to a session and transpose with little thought. I use a trumpet player and if you give him an alto part he will transpose from Eb into his Bb. Generally if you get jazz guys they pick up that skill. I guess the point here is if you are going to learn alto or any sax, best learn how to transpose also.

Not really useless...I do what you described above all the time. I make a Gif or Jpeg lead sheet from paint and import it as a video into Cake. When I record a singer the words are up on screen all the time or if I'm playing jazz in a bar with backing tracks from Cake I have the lead sheet up for me to look at...so a lot of good uses for the trick. It helps me 'cause the lead sheet gets saved with the Cake file and is one less thing for me to manage.

This post made me think that it might be cool to set up the loop function and have the option to program the number of loops. Also maybe it would be cool to set up 2 sections that can loop. --Just musing, don't mind me.

Yes, adding lyrics in staff view is the way to do that, but you have to have the melody notated to do so. If you add lyrics to a melody and export a midi file, the lyrics will transfer with it. One trick I use...type lyrics out in a word processing doc. Use the "snipping" app available in Windows to take a snap shot and save as a .gif or .jpg file. Load this into CW by importing a video (you tell CW to look for all files not just video). You will have a window that shows your lyrics, although they wont follow the music. If I need lyrics to follow the music, use the "snipping" tool to create a line or two at a time and create a movie in any simple video editing program. Render a .avi file and load that into CW. I do this a lot. You do it once and becomes very easy and fast.

Here's the thing, If you work with the same audio track for hours on end, as I have been forced to do in my career, you have a chance to hear the difference between 48K and 44.1, 16 bit vs 64. After hours and hours you might hear the difference, but a week later you won't be able to pick out which one is which. I have tested this out myself not because I really wanted to, or was trying. If you start your project at say 96K, 64 bit you will notice your recordings sounding better and your plugins responding better. That will translate. In the old days 48K stayed in sync better with picture, but that's not an issue anymore.

Since you recorded at 44.1 , 16 bit there will be no improvement in sound by resampling at a higher rate. Added plugins might perform better. Things like reverb, pitch correct etc... But the difference will not be very perceivable. I recommend sticking with your current rates, they are fine. I'm guessing you will end up mixing down to MP3 in the end anyway.

I do the same with Sibelius. Can you get it to lock perfectly? Sibelius is off just a little, enough to view, but not enough to sync tightly.

Hey, I have this problem now too. I have a workaround. Freeze HaLion before save. Then when you re-open unfreeze.

whooo boy, this is all too technical for me. I just wanna play and hear my notes. Once I get things to work I move on and never think about it again which is probably a mistake 'cause I end up reinventing the wheel a lot. Just like this time. But I'm always glad I can come here and learn something just about every dang time.

So I have spent many, many years and hours on Cakewalk. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to workflow and features. I just push buttons till I accomplish my targeted goal. If someone asked me , "How'd you do that?" I'd have a hard time responding. Once something starts working for me, I just get in the groove and go to work. My head is so focused on my music and not how to operate software. My business model has changed drastically and I spend much more time in notation software now. When I come back to Cakewalk I keep noticing how things keep getting way better. Step Record is now way better, not sure when that happened. The expression map is such a help I can not express. Copy and paste is way better. I make too little use of the arrangement features, but that's gonna happen. It's better, Bakers! That is all.... PS. Try doing something with notation.

Yes, but in the heat of the moment I might be playing a harp, or a Hammond b3 and accidental swipe down into the Keyswitching area. Although a violin has its keyswitches below it's playing range a cello or a double bass might have the keyswitch above. Different manufactures put keyswitches in different places. So me putting all my keyswitches in the same place has saved me tons of time. Totally necessary. Outdated now because of articulation maps, but I'm not going to go back and reset all my libraries and make older files not work anymore.

I have not imported any articulation maps. I create my own...and the reason why I would not try to import maps is because I change all my key switches. I went thru every instrument I use and mapped them all to the same or similar notes below the 88 note piano keyboard I use so to not accidentally hit one of these notes while playing. As an example, I try to keep all the legato switches on the same note no matter what library. I also use other controllers to key the switches. I try not to have to remember each library differently. When I started creating my own expression/articulation maps, I forgot about the C1-C2 thing. I realize now I should have just been looking at the number. The new maps are going to save me hours just by the fact that I can start at any place in a sequence and not have to worry where I placed my last key switch. So happy.....

Just throwing this out there. Some of the articulation maps I created worked fine right off the bat. Cinematic Strings in Kontact for example. VSL Special edition and Spectronics Trillion where not. It was very frustrating and disappointing. Until I remembered/ stumbled across the fact that Note numbers don't aline in different companies. C1 is C2 depending on who is mapping things out. Just throwing this out and maybe save someone a couple of hours of head scratching. This expression map/articulation thing is such a great time saver. Love it.

I have been making this argument for years...Cakewalk needs to update notation. I just spoke with a couple of teachers, one an Orchestra and the other a Band director. Since the ensembles can not meet and all the kids are connecting thru lap tops, the two are focusing on music theory and production. They stumbled across this free app called "Cakewalk" by Band Lab and wanted to know if I knew anything about it!! Technology is going to change often and drastically, but notation will not. Notation is the common thread to move forward. Get the notation end up to be more usable midi input and workable as a visual aid. Schools will eat it up and you will have users for life.

I remember having this problem a long time ago. I only had the problem on certain projects. Seems to me empting the Pic Cashe folder use to solve many issues. Also if I had too many clips that I used audio quantization on. The solution to that was bouncing all the audio clips or freezing audio tracks.

I have found a way to work with notation and Cakewalk that is a little clunky, but I really like it. I rewire Sibelius into Cake and sketch the piece into Cake. I can't seem to get Sibelius to sync perfectly with any DAW or software. so I just mute the Sibelius output and just use Sibelius as a visual aid...it follows close but not exact. I either export (save copy as) a midi file out of cake or manually input the score into Sibelius. When I feel I'm done with the composition I export a midi file out of Sibelius and open that midi file as a 2nd project in Cake, copy and past the tracks from Sibelius into the proper Cake file. Cubase actually has a nice function of allowing tracks to be imported from other projects, so many times I use Cubase to marry the 2 projects (Cakewalk and Sibelius.) Cake seems to be so much easier editing and composing than Cubase so I complete the project in Cake. I have become an expert at bouncing projects between software apps. I know that sounds crazy, but I've been very happy seeing good notation as I work. And I'm liking the results.

If you had "auto save" on it might be in the auto save version. Or if you enabled "versions" it might be in one of the versions. You can turn both these features on by going to Preferences (hot key "P"). At the very bottom you can choose Basic or Advanced. Enable the Advanced setting and look under File. The last option is Advanced. Click on that at set your auto save and option features. I auto save every 12 minutes or 20 edits...and allow for 6 versions. Good luck!
