It helped a little, but the output isn't as loud as it should be. Something is wrong, but I don't know what.
-
Ah, yes. I realized that the high pass filter is on with the mic. Not sure, though, if it would create the issues I'm having. I will turn it off and record vocals and see.

I've been using a Stam SA87 and a Dachman 87, both very good mics. Mic preamps are Warm Audio. The other thing I forgot to mention is that the signal isn't as hot. I've had to turn the gain up a bit more. However, the harshness is there at any level. I'm not sure I can accurately describe harshness. But the vocal track, which is usually darker without eq, is now brighter and not smooth or warm. Adding eq makes the harshness worse.

All of a sudden my vocals sound harsh. I replaced cables, tried different mics, and even tried a new mic preamp. Nothing helps. I'm out of ideas. Anyone have a suggestion of what could cause this?

All great information. Thanks!

Thanks for your answers. I appreciate it. I've only exported 3 songs at 32 bit so far. I'll go back and redo them at 24 bit.

I've been exporting my mixed songs at a 32 bitrate. What is the normal bitrate to export a wave file?
-
I found the issue. It was a Waves de-esser. When I deleted it, everything was normal.

I will do that and see. My mics, though, are not cheap. I'm using a Stam Audio SA87, which is a good mic. Thanks!

Sorry, but I don't know what other info to give. I have soloed it, which is how I discovered the issue. I recorded it a while back and am in the process of mixing. It seemed fine a couple of days ago, but when I soloed it to check it out, I heard some distortion. I also had compression on the track but had to turn it way down from where I had it originally because it no longer sounded as clean. I did not record it too hot, btw.

The vocals I recorded on a certain song were fine after I recorded them but are now distorting in a couple of areas. They weren't distorting after I recorded them, but they do a little bit now here and there. Does anyone know what would cause that?

I've had the WA12 for about 3 years, so it's not under warranty. At this point, I don't know what they could do. The WA12 sounds better than my interface. I just don't like the ringing it does on certain consonants.
-
I had the mic in a closet a while back. Same issue.
-
I've been looking at the Camden EC1. Thanks!

Suggestions for a decent mic pre?
-
When I record vocals, the mic pre that I've been using (Warm Audio WA12 Mkll) sounds like it feeds back with some consonants. I tried turning the gain way down, but when I sing certain consonants, it's like it feeds back (slight ringing). It's not the mic, because it does it with every mic I use. And I have a little vocal booth I made. I'm thinking it's the mic pre. Maybe someone has an idea of what the issue could be. Or perhaps a recommendation for a better mic pre.

It's working. Thanks for your help!

I will try it when I'm able to get to my computer later. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll let you know.

I've been using Melodyne for years. I haven't used it in a while though. When I tried to open it (CTRL + M), nothing happens. I even tried to re-install it. Nothing. Suggestions?

I just ordered the ARC system. I figured if it will help, then why not? Thanks for the suggestion.
-
What exactly is the K-system?
-
Interesting. Thanks, Craig!

That's pretty much what I've decided I need to do. With monitors, I hear all the bad stuff. When I use headphones and compare with reference tracks, my vocals sound as good as what I hear from the RT. But I'm trying to mix with monitors to try to get rid of whatever bad frequencies they uncover.
-
Thanks, John! I will look into it.
-
When I listen on the monitors, I hear every little imperfection in my vocals. But through headphones (and I have several pairs) I can't hear any weird frequencies. They sound good. So I guess I'll trust the monitors and fix all the frequency issues. That way I'll know they'll be right (or better).
