Those of you running older software on Win 10... are you using compatibility mode and / or run as administrator? Just curious if you're doing anything special to get the apps to run.

In all fairness those who swicth to Windows have no relief from the (d)evolving OS.

in all fairness, the types of issues I have had on Windows 10 amount to no more than nag popups telling me I need to upgrade.  I have not yet had an update break any of my hosts or plugins. On the other hand,  if I were a mac user,  it looks like Catalina would have broken them all.

I, too, have had the same experience.  Every update has broken nothing for me.
Compared to the old versions of Windows, the stability of 10 has been nothing
short of extraordinary.

@cclarry Thanks for posting that LArry. I had forgot about that song. They really did it justice. At first I thought that only two of the originals were in that band. But as I kept watching, it became very clear to me that it was all of them except the bass player. I'm going listen to that album!!

Actually the Keyboard player is also different.  That's not Dennis DeYoung...but he does a great job sounding like him!

Side note, my friend August plays (and kinda looks like) Tommy Shaw in Dennis DeYoung's band, so they can play all the Styx songs.

Thanks for that post cclarry!  Definitely brought back some memories...  My friend (noted above) was in a really good Styx tribute band called Grand Illusion (which is how Dennis found him).  When I lived in So. Cal. I used to go see them a lot and even provided some gear with connections I had at the time.  In fact, it was at one of their gigs that I got to meet Bob Moog!  The same guys were also in a Boston tribute band called Smokin' (the only one in the U.S. as far as we, or Boston themselves, knew of).

After I had moved to the Pacific Northwest, they got a double gig at a nearby casino to play Boston on one night and Styx the next.  I pretty much supplied their entire backline and all backup instruments except drums.  I even had duplicates of all their rack gear (they emailed me their setups).  Well, everything EXCEPT one vocal processor that's used for one Styx song that requires a wide stereo ping-pong effect.  Needless to say, that was the ONLY piece of gear that the PDX airport security managed to zap, so the keyboardist stood on one side of the stage while I was on the other each with microphones just to be the echos.  It turned out well because the audience thought it was just a fun part of the act and not a last-minute solution to an "OH CRAP!!!" situation!  LOL. 😂

Oh yeah, I got to be roadie the whole weekend, playing during the sound checks and including running onto stage during the initial intro to replace batteries in August's guitar remote pack.  I finished a mere two seconds before he was supposed to hit the first chord!  I have a lot of respect for real roadies after that. 🙂

@Scott R. Garrigus I can run CE, and do simple things on it. I did it recently just to see if it would work. However, I have moved on to Audition. When I need to work on waves I use that instead of CE.

I think in CE2K's instance, it's more a matter of good coding than anything Win10 is doing!! And Audition is really just CE with a new UI. Most of the same things in CE are still in it (well the version of Audition I am using). Such as when I go to import a wav file in, or save as, the dialog windows is the same one that was used in CE2K!

@Grem Ah ha... okay, so it runs, but you didn't test it completely. I've gotten older software to run as well. Some apps are fine to do pretty much everything, but there are others that run, but then crash when you try to do certain things.

I thought that was maybe why you were interested in old programs that will still run in Win 10?  Maybe still some hope for you to get rid of that old pile of boxes in the garage? 😀

Most well written apps from after Windows went 32-bit should still work, but there can be issues.  Microsoft spent a lot of time and effort patching Windows to handle all sorts of compatibility things (not sure how much of this is going on today though).  One off bits that would make older apps run correctly.  That's kind of evolved into the compatibility assistant and administrator.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/317510/how-to-use-the-compatibility-administrator-utility-in-windows

It always surprises me the list of apps that Windows will add compatibility flags for automatically.  Here's a list of things Windows (a HUGE list) can do to help an app out:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/planning/compatibility-fixes-for-windows-8-windows-7-and-windows-vista

I don't think Apple has ever really cared.  Dropping support for 32-bit apps seems very short sighted.  The great irony is that many of the utility apps that developers use are likely to be tiny command line 32-bit apps, which they may or may not be able to find/build native 64-bit versions of.  Which will make it harder to fix up older software, because the tools to build it won't work.

The whole concept that 64-bit apps are somehow always better than 32-bit is just false.  Many 64-bit ports are actually slower and use more resources than a 32-bit version would.  Music software is one of the areas 64-bits does make a whole lot of sense, anything that needs to use a lot of data, but that's not true of a lot of software.  Just like multi-cores/multi-threading doesn't help lots of software.  Not everything can be done in parallel.

If I only had those problems.  Usually the updates break my home network. Reverting to previous install is the only solution.   So far none of them have made it to where I can't use my M-Audio PCI cards.

Usually the network sharing is broken in the (f)updates.
