Should I get or save money for something better?  Currently doing everything on headphones, but also don't have any sound treated room.  If I was to treat my room, know of a cheap way to do it?

I have these and I love them. However, you would need a subwoofer  if you do (sub)bass heavy music. For $50 though, they are almost in no brainer territory. Mackie is a well respected brand.

If you're handy:

  • For acoustic panels, DIY with Owens Corning 703 (mentioned above), but you can find more detailed instructions in other forums.
  • For bass traps, you can DIY with fiberglass insulation.

I finally got around to calibrating the speakers using ARC 3.  Here's the result.  The bass frequencies are hyped (80 - 220 Hz).  Certainly don't do a mix without flattening out the response.  After ARC 3 EQ, it sounds balanced.  I've been pretty happy with the CR3-X purchase (mainly using it for virtual instrument monitoring).

Any way to use ARC 3 (or other EQ) systemwide?
