What I wanted and what I got

I wanted to replace my mid-grade drum overhead mics to these:

But I got this instead:

First off I, got mine brand new for $954 with tax and shipping on reverb.com.

Why would I get one mic in place of two? Well on deep dive the Sphere can actually operate as a stereo mic when positioned directly between the front and back capsule.

And, the software emulates the Coles, so I 'get' the Coles sound for less than a third of the price. And I get to sell my two Sennheiser condenser mics for a little mo9re cash back.

Nais.

But as far as I can tell (I just read about it), you'd need to record with an UAD AI, using the Sphere 180 plugin to get stereo recording, or Am I way off?

Congrats anyway mate!

Uh oh, I did not catch that. I'll need to look into it further.

Kenny, think of it this way, the dog will never sue you for half of your music gear outta spite.

Nice Ed. I hope it brings many hours of recorded joy.

Hey Ed,

I did not find the L22 useful for doing stereo recordings. Instead I replaced it with a n AEA R88.
YMMV

Are you saying you tried the L22 as a stereo drum overhead mic? That's my only plan for it.

The dog won't have to sue me at all .

If he is home by himself for too long he will get bored and chew up my favorite guitar and every other piece of musical gear I own ...

Bitflipper knows exactly what I'm talking about 😉

Sorry Bapu I wish I could contribute as per the topic ...

Kenny

It wouldn't be a CH thread if it does not off topic on the first page.

No. I tried it for stereo guitar and mandolin.
what is the “back” diaphragm in mono , is never as hot a signal even when “off axis” for a stereo capture. I was not impressed (with the stereo results). Interesting piece of kit, but I don’t think you’ll get the results you are looking for. At least I didn’t/couldn’t. They have some tutorials online, I inquired about stereo , if I remember correctly, “we’re working on it “ was the reply. Maybe the software has evolved. I don’t see how the discrepancy in the captures could. But maybe…
