thanks for taking time to reply. I did try this method but when i do that as soon as I hit ok in the transpose dialogue box my cakewalk application closes immediately

I did try this on an audio clip to make sure this worked on my system. It did.....

We need more information about your system.  See my signature for the type of information we would need.

I am assuming that you have updated all of your hardware drivers.  Do this using manufacturer's websites rather than Windows updates. While you’re at it, you might as well check you are using the latest versions.

Hardware drivers?? means my laptop?...as not using any music hardware yet

The drivers in your computer for the audio device, etc.
