More bad news.

It has just been announce that Leamington Assembly is closing with immediate effect. A Paul Young gig scheduled for this Wednesday has been cancelled, it was that sudden.

This comes close on the new that Borderline in London and The Citadel in St. Helens are closing. That three significant venues taken off the UK circuit for small to medium touring bands and other venues around the country have either closed or are under threat.

Sad times.

In this case commercial considerations. Business Rates (property taxes) and maintenance costs.

Borderline's closure seem to be a result of development and the "gentrification" of Soho.

A number of venues have been forced to close when residential properties have been built nearby and the new residents complain about the noise.  For example a venue in Guildford that has been active since the 50's is being threatened because nearby offices have been converted to apartments.

Its a big threat to grassroots music in the UK.

Stuff like that happens all the time. Totally ridiculous. I met a guy a few years back who had been running a small haulage business from a yard on land that he owned for 30 years. The council built houses on the land adjacent to it and the following year refused to renew his licence to operate the business because their residents didn't want to live next to a lorry yard.

Good thing there are plenty of exposure bucks floating around, so those artists can pay their bills.

Really sad.

We're lucky here in Flagstaff that the Orpheum Theater is still going strong. It's in the middle of old downtown. The only thing residential close to it is a gawd-awful 5-story hotel that everyone in town hates. F-em.

Besides, it's home to a killer Sky Black & The Mural Mice mural (The Sound Of Flight).
