Before, I was using a Hornet plugin that has the autogain feature (many of them have it).

also very good, there’s a free one for reaper if I remember EDIT: just seen price of 49E, seems high for a utility plugin. Stick with Gainmatch, so good

Poor man's Gainmatch...

Place a reliable meter before your effects, and after...
if the meters don't match, adjust the output volume on the last plugin in your
chain until they do.  If you want to ensure proper levels, you
can do this for each plugin you place in the FX bin to ensure that
the gain is proper going into, and coming out of each plugin.  It's more
work...but it's FREE!
