I paid $1000 for my ever slightly used 1976 Series 1 in 1977 (MSRP was $2000). A quick web search says today's value of 1977 $1000 is $4475. 

After 45 years it does not strike me that my $1000 was any real investment. 

Footnote: The guy I bought it from was a P-Bass collector/seller. He admitted he did not know much about Alembics. It belonged to a young student (12 years old) of his who was unable to play the long scale. That is why he priced it "fairly" at 50% off the retail price.

True enough, but given its a "tool", it has held its value.

FWIIW - the history of Alembic. 
 

spending my high school and college years in the SF Bay Area I got to see a lot of companies come and go. At least they are still building basses.
