Steely Dan News 2021

Recommended Posts

For those interested, wish Walter was still with us but ...

Several lps are still my fav. recordings for reference tracks, my yardstick for quality & taste musically & sonically..

"Earlier this week we were greeted with the news that not one but TWO new Steely Dan-ish records would be dropping soon, both of them live documents. Northeast Corridor: Steely Dan Live! and Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly Live are both set to street on September 24, 2021 from Universal Music."

I saw the a Nightfly tour he did a couple of years ago.  The band was " Donald Fagan and the Night Fly's" . The guest band were 4 young gents from the upper Ny area. Great players and all in there mid 20's. They also did a number of standard Steely tunes with the band - and the arraignments were a little more sparse  of course - but just as good.

The videos linked above are pointing to a full " normal " Steely Dan compliment and some great embellishments to the standard arrangements. Can't wait for these releases as well.  Wow Keith Carlocks drums on Aja are great - as are the backing vocals.

Aja is a perfect record.

A classic zebra in the annals of punkadelia.

One of my fav tracks from Scam that featured Carlton's classic solo, Jon Herington on this version.

That whole performance is great - one of the best of Steely Live. Bodhisttva is amazing on that beacon theatre recording.

YES!!! I especially like  "Kid Charlemagne", plus "Haitian Divorce", "Sign In Stranger", and "The Caves of Altamira". Heck, I like them all. The weakest one IMO is "Royal Scam"

I think Bernard "Pretty" Purdie played drums on most of the tracks, and he is one of my favorite drummers (I play drums too, so I listen a lot for making my Band-in-a-Box aftermarket styles). Bernard plays great grooves, uses tasty licks, supports the song, and never gets in the way. Of course none of the musicians on this album are any less than brilliant.

Bernard is also one of my fav drummers along with Chuck Rainey for bassists. Both play so in the pocket.
