Tips on Eurobeat

Maybe I'm just exposing myself as the out-of-touch old fart that I am, but I have no idea what "Eurobeat" is. I'll bet I could pull off some authentic Euro-beating, though, if I had an example. Got a link or two?

To make it simple, it's Italdisco but with a strong brass and kick presence. It has a certain "common" scheme that it follows, I maybe remember it: "Intro, Pre-Chorus, Synth, Chorus, Verse 1, Chorus, Synth, Verse 2, Chorus, Synth."

It should be something like that, but some artists change it.

P.S. Don't worry that you don't know it lol. It was big only in Japan and Hong Kong back in the 1980s-1990s.

OK, I get it. Didn't know that style had a name. Slow it down a few bpm and front the band with some teenage girls, and you've got a genre that's still alive and well today. In Japan, anyway. I like the energy, but it's a bit frantic for my laid-back paradigm.

If I was to set out to replicate that sound, it would absolutely have Redopter by D16 Group on the drum bus. And one of my favorite 80's synths, the inexpensive but faithful Oberheim 8-voice emulation from Cherry Audio.

I see, thanks. Do you happen to know any free ones?

For a free Oberheim emu, check out OBXD.

Redopter is a distortion plugin, but with a distinct character that lends itself to drum enhancement. For a free substitute, I'd experiment with amp sims, which could probably do the trick just fine. Note that in either case, the plugin would be placed in a separate bus from the main drum bus and mixed under the main drum mix. Here's one guy's list of the best free amp sims.

I might just give it a go. Once I get over my current phase, which is 70's style synth anthems. I blame it on Wookie. Every time he posts a song, I get all nostalgic for vintage Larry Fast and Vangelis. That'll pass, though. I was thinking about 60's surf next, although that's challenging for a piano player.

Not free, but worth the money. Not expensive, either.

I got their  Korg DW 8000 b/c my brother used to have a DW 6000 way back when.  The 8000 is the big sibling.

The owner was actually part of the development team for much of the original E-mu sound libraries.  You're gonna need an Emax/ Emulator/ Emulator Ii!

They saved my a** when my Proteus FX died. The Proteus 1/ 2 sounds are not identical but some are pretty close.

And don't forget DEXED https://dexedsynth.com/

This one IS free, and one of the best DX7 emulations out there.

The Cherry Audio stuff is very good and inexpensive. Well worth it.
