Best Way To Program MIDI Synth Paramters?

So there are at least 2 ways I know of to control VST synth parameters.  

1.  Synth automation lane in track view

2.  MIDI CC programming in either PRV or event list view.

(am I missing any?)

What are the pros/cons of each?

1. Envelopes are easier to work with but more prone to crash (often it's plugin fault) and have their own quirks.

2. Working with MIDI events usually means more drudgery as we don't have the best toolset to work with CC (not the worst either).

In the recent versions of Cakewalk you have better MIDI CC<>envelopes conversion options.

Sending midi control from a remote device is an option say nanoKontrol2 or a keyboard that has sliders. I prefer to draw them on the automation lanes if will be changing through the song. I insert them in the event list before the first note if it's a one shot deal.

You can also put them in clips & copy/drag them around.

(There are also articulation maps that I know very little about.)
