Hi,

I've got a new song out. It's called "Second Wind" - you can check it out here:
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14254040

It features most of the usual suspects:
Superior Drums
MODO Bass
some Kontakt and a few synth noises
Melody is Plasmonic Synth (and Noisy synth)
plus real live Strats and Tele
also, I got a tube preamp (Effectrode Blackbird) after the guitar parts were recorded - so I reamped them through the real tubes 😉

all comments welcome 😉

All my stuff is here http://www.soundclick.com/johnbraner.

Don't forget - Download CDs (including my newest one "Pull the Other One") and singles are still available at all the normal streaming services.
CDBaby won't be selling physical CDs anymore - so just contact me if you want one - or look on Amazon or Apple etc.

I do think this is a quality mix.

Your guitar is always so wonderful.

On my laptop, it seems like maybe pull that synth bass back a little, and turn up the guitar.

as was mentioned by Bajan Blue, the breakdown at 2:50 is cool.

For me, the guitar is just excellent.  If that is the preamp imparting the sound, then that is a nice pre.

Hi Jesse and David - once again, thanks a lot for taking the time to listen.

The new preamp is a Effectrode Blackbird (https://www.effectrode.com/products/effects-pedals/blackbird-vacuum-tube-preamp/ ) and it does sound really nice ;)

On hifi speakers, I think the synth bass is a little light, if anything, so it's probably good where it is ;)

David - you cannot beat the sound of the Strat/Tele single coils ;)

love the mix of guitars and the more modern synths and sound designs. Sweet guitar licks and tone. Agreed that that bass tone is a keeper - Geddy Lee eat your heart out.

If I were to pick a nit a bit, I found the balance a bit weird between the extremely washy hi-hats, and the snare which is pretty vanilla in its tone and ambient treatment, and up front.  I might want to hear more nasty ring on the snare or some AP550 compression boomy roomy on it. I dunno, it's a nit, innit?

top quality effort, John, I too love your variety!

cheers,

-Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for listening - picking nits is OK, it gives us something to think about.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "washy" hi hats (don't bother trying to explain because these things are hard to do with only words) ;)

but as far as the snare - it seems the more I compress snares, the less I like it. I use some saturation and stuff on them, but I don't really like a lot of reverb either. (my favourite thing on snares right now is the Korneff Audio Pawn Shop Compressor   https://korneffaudio.com/product/pawn-shop-comp-2-0/    )

It's just me... ;)
