For the last 2  updates 09-21 and 11-21 , I've had a similar experience where my WIN 7 system gets the same internet connection message failure. My Win 10 lap top installs from the in app and web installer correctly. For the install on my Win 7 system ( my functioning DAW ) - I have had to install using  the Band Lab app.

Ah - this is probably due to the lack of TLS 1.1 / TLS 1.2 support in Win 7.  It needs a Windows Update, then needs to be enabled as default ( FYI TLS is the latest version of SSL for secure https connections).

details are here:   https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392

All modern websites use the latest TLS 1.2 protocol, so installing this is really a must if you need internet on Windows 7.

Thanks Mark - Will check it out.  Seeing as this is a really old update - is there an easy way to see if these protocols are already updated?

My machine is really quite old - last time I did an update ( likely at the end of  win 7 support -2020 ? , one or another really hosed my system, so I did a restore,  quit updating and locked it down except for the Cake  and a few Plug updates. It still is a very solid -efficient set-up.

This page covers what the update does:

As you scroll down the page, it details what it changes in the registry, and what the various registry entries mean.

I guess you could check your existing registry entries against what is on this page.

@msmcleod TLS 1.2 is already in Explorer WIN7 x64 SP1 ScreenShot_20220116093912.thumb.jpeg.676daa09e42616fd36b41d3035b2e95c.jpeg

I selected it and unselected TLS 1.1 and set by default in regedit,

but still when I open v.  11-21 I still can´t activate it. Please since officially Cakewalk doesen´t run with win7, do you confirm that it connects online and can be activated?

I also solved the issue of the missing drivers so now the net connection should be ok

Yes - if you're using VirtualBox, make sure you've installed the extension pack, and configured the network in the virtual machine's settings.

Instructions on installing the extension pack can be found here:  https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=99355

For the network settings, either a bridged or NAT connection will work, depending on your requirements.

@msmcleod good morning, thanks for your support ...no, I don´t use virtualbox; as you suggested me I did a dual boot and installed win7 x64, but seems that the latest versions can´t connect online and can´t be activated. Which is your opinion? Thanks again in advance. Best regards.

Cakewalk requires 64bit Win7 or newer and while Win7 is not officially supported, Cakewalk does run on it.

Cakewalk will not work on 32bit Windows.

@scook good morning, thanks again. I installed Cakewalk latest version 12-21 on Win7, but can´t activate it because it doesen´t recorgnise the internet. Please, do you confirm me that the latest versions of Cakewalk are compatible with Win7? Thanks again.

I've just tried my Win 7 boot, and it's working fine with the latest Cakewalk.  I  went to Refresh Activation, it launched The Edge browser - I logged in, and it successfully refreshed my activation.

As long as Win 7 has all of the latest updates, and the TLS fix, it should work fine.

That being said, you can always download BandLab Assistant and authorise using that.

@msmcleod sequencly to your great information, I tried to install online Edge Browser, and with much surprise, also this program installation failed because coudn' t connect to internet! I think this is the bug to solve. I will then try to update Win 7 and fix the TLS, and try again, hopefully to solve the issue. Please, do you know which TLS version is the latest for Windows 7? Is that TSL 1.2 or 1.3?

I had found this thread when I was looking for a solution to hanging notes. After I just now solved this very frequent and annoying problem, I was looking for where this thread was. Luckily I had copied some of the things that I believe Mark McLeod had said, so I was finally able to find it when I searched on that whole paragraph. I hadn't realized it was a Cakewalk thread, which is the DAW I use.

I too had a MIDISport 4x4. I realized that even though I had thought I had updated the drivers in the past year or two, I went back to their site after reading this thread. The only Driver choice on their site that came close to my model was the MIDISport 4x4 Anniversary edition. I had been reluctant to get another MIDI interface for fear it would not solve the problem. However, when I realized that my hanging notes would even occur in a new project, with no other MIDI information challenging the device, I finally made my move. I bought an 8x8 MOTU Express 128. Though it's only been a couple of days, I've had no hanging whatsoever, and I used to hear it at least every few minutes. Thanks for helping me with this.
