Video editing

Recommended Posts

My aim is simply to import a video and then attach an audio file to it. No complicated cutting and pasting or timeline issues. Just simply lining one up against the other then exporting it to a video file that I can upload to youtube.

Before exporting I click Edit-Select-All. Then I have chosen to save as  two different file types - 1) a youtube (WMV) file  then 2) an MP4 file. Whilst exporting i see the message that audio then video is being exported.

Either the resultant file does not play the audio or the file does not play at all. Is there something fundamental I may have overlooked?

I would suggest using a different workflow that would allow you greater control. I do similar YouTube videos and do all of the matching of video and audio in the Video editing software, something that is designed for exactly that purpose, and not in your DAW. Cakewalk only has limited abilities regarding exporting of video, it's really designed to allow you to bring video in for viewing whilst you write music, rather than be exporting video out and I would suggest a fully featured Video editor would give you far more options and better results.

If your PC is capable I would highly recommend using Davinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design. There is a fully featured version available from their webiste for free. It does have some fairly high requirements for hardware though. Using that I bring in audio I have exported from Cakewalk and line it up as required. I can then export the combined video and audio in much higher quality video formats than Cakewalk natively supports.

I do this. When you do File > Export > Video, select Encoding Options >> Honestly I usually use WMV and WMAudioV9 Codec.

Select sample rate/bit depth channel count. Match the bit depth in the Audio Mixdown options. (Dither if you want).

Save it.

Depending on your Codecs, you will have different options. If you don't buy any software, the codecs included with Windows are limited.

For free video trimming and mirroring, stuff like that, I use Microsoft Movie Maker which is also free. OBS and Open Shot Video Editor are other free tools for the purpose of editing videos.

I use Movie Maker ( Vegas) now distributed by Magix. I paid about $30 on sale and it’s a bargain. Even I figured it out in a few hours   I tried Cakewalks video option and it’s just way to convoluted. I think it’s meant for scoring movies using multi tracks for music, dialogue and sound effects.
Movie maker uses ASIO and your audio interface as well as it has unlimited audio and video tracks. Add text pictures etc and you can output to any format

And a big bonus is it can use all your VST audio plug ins. It also comes with Sound Forge wave editor which is on it own worth the price. You can open any audio track directly to SF from within Movie Maker. Great for live videos with bad sound
There’s lots of free video editing software around but this is Cakewalks video equivalent

Thanks but am still not having any joy. There is no audio still and the video freezes after a few seconds.  I realise cakewalk isnt specialising in this type of feature but as it is available it should really work.  I have a Dell 10th gen i7. 16gb Ram. Nothing ever slows it down.

Another quick query. is there any way I can attach a still image to an audio soundtrack then save as a video so that the image will show throughout the length of time the music plays?

Thanks

ok... you know you have to select the range you are exporting and make sure the tracks you want to export aren't muted?

I hate to ask the obvious, but just in case...

Thats a good call...I went to check that but as I was selecting all of the tracks then it should have by default (I  presume) exported all of the audio from start to finish.

Thanks Neal. Do you mean you use Youtubes own video editing software?

No I meant this software.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/davinciresolve/

There is a paid version referred to as "Studio" or a completely free version. The free version will do just about anything you want as far as video editing goes unless you are a pro film or tv production editor. It has features that rival just about any other video editor out there, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Vegas etc.

For anyone wanting to work with video it's a total no brainer. So long as you have a decent processor, a decent amout of RAM and a compatible Cuda or OpenCL graphics card it will work. Totally free .....what's not to like.

You can also use your existing VST's in it's "fairlight audio" section too.

Thanks as well, Downloading now.  Will give it a try as one thing about Vegas is your only licensed for 2 machines and I would like it on a 3rd. This might solve the problem.
