Midi keyboard

That's what I use, the M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk3. Simple, plug it in to usb, it works in every DAW I've tried it in without stuffing about. It's also got an on/off switch so I just turn it on when needed. I don't mind the feel of the keys either. It's also got the midi 5 pin out if you want to control sound modules, I haven't bothered with that though. If you want a hardware controller aspect to it then it won't suffice, it's just a keyboard. There's a 49 key version, I personally wouldn't go smaller than that.

Sounds like you might be looking for something quite different, a mini keyboard with controllers. I've only tried the larger keyboards with controllers but in the end, I preferred just the keyboard. A separate mixer might be good though.
