File export makes unknown file type

Sometimes when i do file- export-audio, with the track or tracks selected, source set to entire mix, channel format stereo, file type wave, sample rate usually 48, bit depth usually 24, no dithering, all mix enables checked but audible bounce and live input unchecked ... then the exported file i get is called file or sometimes 4 file type and wont even open. Then if i dont change anything at all and do another export exactly the same without changing anything most times the next export will be a properly done wave file.  Any ideas what is going on? Im still on version 2019.09 till i finish some stuff, but it happened on earlier versions too. Thanks

Using dots in names can result in export files with unexpected extensions like the .4 mentioned in the OP. Best to stay with the old Windows restriction of not using dots in file names (or in this case project names).

Don't use dots in project or export names

Add .wav to the files if you do (and you are exporting wav files otherwise add the appropriate file extension for the export format).

Thanks, I'm sure some were numbered in the name like 1. for a version of an export. Appreciate the answer.

Numbers in names are fine. Use dashes or underscores to as separators instead of dots.

Historically, I used dashes or underscores in project file names but lately I've been using dots (like 9.01) and haven't seen a problem. I don't recall using dots in exports but may have. Am I setting myself up for disappointment?
