About Me

  1. Hello people! ... message in a bottle here... Allow me to write down here my "in progress" reflection on editing VO / Narrations best practices / workflows. I am currently working on my first audio book (getting back from an 80% DAW-ACTIVITY STOP that lasted for the last decade... so be forgiving... building back my chops here...) Sometimes, trying to sort out some thoughts might be helpful for me and others and even trigger a discussion about better workflows? Maybe not... anyway... bombs away. ... SO... being the lazy a**h*** that I am, i'm trying to re-invent the wheel on day one of working on a new project... sooooo me.... (but i'll call it "process optimization attempt" officially) 😉 CONTEXT / OBJECTIVES Working on a audio book with a session that lasts about 3 hrs and should be edited back to about 90-120 minutes. Working with, of course, TIME RULER MARKERS Trying to evaluate scenarios to help share time-ruler markers between other software tools... Testing the new ARRANGEMENT feature to edit out the outtakes and render correctly-edited files (no audio process yet...) Evaluating alternative workflows... QUESTIONS Is there anything like clip-based time markers/rulers? (to comment at the "original recording" time period, in order to keep the "session / project time ruler" fully avail for the editing process). Is there anything like a VST "time marker ruler" (in order to share time-based production notes between programs...)? According to KVR in 2018, there is no such thing... Is there a way to better take notes of the "out-takes" WHILE RECORDING? Like, I do not know... be able to use the mute tool to mute out portions you already know you won't be keeping? I was tempted to use a midi track with clips... Next time i'll try the ARRANGEMENT FEATURE to mark... (I just was afraid to use it while mission-critical recording). Should some time-marking capabilities be avail at the TRACK FOLDER level? Should 2 more "marker types" be made avail? Like a "cut start" and a "cut end" marker type? (I know i can just mark "I" and "O" in the comments, but to have a specific type could be more easily connected to other editing tools / workflow... or even to CAL? I dunno...) ACTUAL ATTEMPTS Tried to use the new ARRANGEMENT feature in CwbBl (like some kind of a CUTLIST like in sound forge... but here, of course, I identified what needed to be KEPT). So far so good... it is really scary though to look at the time-line shift around when rendering... makes me feel like an audio region in the latter portion of my timeline will be deleted... The "markers to arrangements" feature worked as expected. Render proceeded as expected. Proceeding now to listen to this render to see if clips and pops can be heard (of course, the "reading flow" might not be the best at that point... but I did try to evaluate what was the narrator's current flow at the time of the edits, to minimize further editing down the road... I guess I am about to know if I succeeded or not... 😉 WORKFLOW PROPOSITIONS Since the ARRANGER feature scared me a little, I might try to use VOLUME AUTOMATION (or other type of automation that could be "shared" between softwares) to cut out the bad takes of my recordings, and then render the file to a new track and complete the file using the strip silence feature... I am kind of hoping that if I needed to also work in another program for specific reasons (like SoundForge or spectraLayers) I could manage to export the file combined with the automation envelope in order for me to have some kind of time markers shared between programs somehow... PROS : would be "movable" with my original recorded clips, leaving my time ruler markers / arrangements sections free to be used for the "finished" files... CONS: navigation would not be as easy as moving between markers using shortcuts... I'll keep you posted... maybe... Do find this post interesting somewhat? Or should I just stop it right here? Regards.
  2. Cakewalk has some great features to speed up editing when it comes to dialogue! So, whether it's a podcast, an audio book, or voice over... Cakewalk by BandLab has you covered!
  3. Hello. Is there a way to import to a theme several edited images at once? Or is this tedious one-by-one method as good as it gets? Is there a possibility to open a theme file in an archiver, extract it to a folder accessible by Windows Explorer and then pack it back after you're done making changes?
  4. Using East West Symphonic Orchestra Play Edition on Cakewalk Bandlab. Is there a way of adding modulation expression to individual midi notes only? I tried to accent one note of a cello from loud to soft in volume. Unfortunately, this meant the next note started softly, rather than the previous intensity which the initial volume was programmed at. I am using the master patches as it is a varied piece and I don't wish to load lots of individual patches in different midi channels. I am hoping to find a way of editing individual midi notes, the modulation expression (cc11 or cc7), at different points in the piece of music, without having to make sure the modulation expression is on full by the time the attack of the next note starts and everywhere else in the piece of music. Thank you!
  5. Hello, is it possible that we can get a feature that allows us to toggle the auto-scroll on or off like seen in the attached photo. When I attempt to us the "Left Click Locks Scroll" feature to me it is a hit or miss as it does not work all the time and the screen runs away from me when I want to focus on a specific area to work on.
  6. 1. I wanted to try to use a bass loop lifted from an audio track and line it up and manipulate it so that it will play in time with a midi drum loop. 2. I pasted the midi drum loop into Track 1 and set the project tempo to 85bpm. 3. Pasted the audio clip into Track 2. Managed to get audio transients to show in the audio clip and moved them around manually so the bass (audio) plays in sync with the drums (midi). 4. Duplicated the bass clip so that it plays for as long as I want it to under the drums. 5. Bounced the adjusted audio clip. 6. Adjusted the project tempo to 120 and both tracks adjust. The audio (bass) track adjusts but it doesn't play in time with the drums anymore. What I am I doing wrong?
  7. EDT

    One big wish

It would be really great if the existing capabilities in Cakewalk could be streamlined to provide a really user-friendly and intuitive audio and midi loop creator and time and pitch stretching tool. There appears to be the basis of this in the loop construction window but it far from easy to manipulate audio. I actually can't even work out what showing slices does or how to use them (comparing with Ableton where markers are easily created, deleted, moved, and audio automatically adjusts to fit the correct tempo (and pitch if required)). Maybe I'm just missing something but I've been over it many times and it'still a mystery to me.
  8. I don't know what I'm doing wrong now. It's taking me HOURS to do simple edits. 1. I realized that when I zoom in to maximum level, the beginnings of my clips are not snapping precisely to the grid. I have my snap setting to almost max extreme. 2. For some reason, I can't get the end of the clip to snap to the grid. It either passes it and crossfades into the next clip or it doesn't reach the grid. It's only a tiny amount probably not audible and I can just turn off snap and get it there manually but why is it doing this?
  9. Hi, I'm new to Cakewalk. I've noticed that when i record through MIDI keyboard and i wish to edit a note that's been played out of time through piano roll, the notes (shown as lines) tend to like to stick to each beat rather than allowing me to simply drag it wherever i want it. I can usually hear exactly where i want a note to fall just by listening, and looking at the playback, but then the software won't allow me to drag it to that exact place. It doesn't sound quite right when it's exactly on the beat because the rest of the notes have their own sort of... flow. Is there a way to allow for more flexibility in terms of dragging notes, for example decreasing the fractions by which a note can be dragged/ not weighting them towards the beats? thanks! Lucy
  10. Running latest CbB version as of March 17th. Lynx aurora over rednet. Win 10 1809 updated. Today I was doing some vocal tracking on a medium sized project (18 tracks, 15 mostly basic plugins, 6 mins long) and my usual method of live tracking is to bypass all effects with FX bypass button then lower my latency to 64 or 128 (rednet) Then input echo and start tracking vocal but I was getting a varying latency, like it would start at nothing then creep around to probably 40ms. All fx bypassed.. plugin load balancing on or off made no difference. Hit the PDC button which made the latency mostly go away but I got lots of digital clicks and stutters. loaded a blank song and tracked with my latency at 32 and 64 no problem with echo on and it was good... Now I’m pretty used to doing this, I have many music production awards and have used and loved cakewalk for 18 years... I’ve run massive songs with five time this amount of material and plugins and had no issue tracking in the past... I’d just hit the FX bypass and all was good. Now I’m fiddling with PDC and it’s not cleanly letting me track with my low latency on a decent size project like I’m used to.. Thoughts? a side note/different issue: I was Consistently getting a glitch when editing clips of audio where if I highlighted a clip and dragged the edge to close/hide the audio clip it would not fully shrink/hide/close the clip unless I dragged very slowly.. got to be quite frustrating. 11. Get 10% off all IntelliScore products - use code: digifreq10 http://www.intelliscore.net/
  12. Piano Roll - Auto Focus & Auto Lock = Link this options. Hey, guys. 🙂 It will be convenient when editing multiple tracks. Then the instrument (track) can be selected through the selection of notes and at the same time other notes (instruments) will be automatically "locked" (it will be impossible to edit them).
  13. Just not too long ago Deezer open sourced this interesting A.I. software called Spleeter. Its a A.I. tool trained and designed to separate audio based on vocals or instruments. Its not by any means perfect but a facinating tool that could be potentially implemented into cakewalk: https://github.com/deezer/spleeter Spleeter, a Deezer source seperation library is written in python and uses Tensorflow to separate (According to their Github Readme): Vocals (singing voice) / accompaniment separation (2 stems) Vocals / drums / bass / other separation (4 stems) Vocals / drums / bass / piano / other separation (5 stems) Pretty cool A.I. software to be honest. Would anybody here agree that this should be implemented into Cakewalk?
  14. So, after recording a MIDI track, I did end up missing a couple notes and decided to go edit the notes in piano roll, rather than re-record that section. However, I seem to be having all sorts of problems simple adding notes to an input(I have been programmed into simplicity with how FL Studios edits midi, so I'm coming off just click to add); am I missing something? I sometimes have to double click to even add a note, honestly.
  15. Hi, I have a track I am finishing off and the main instrument within it is my old Yamaha CP-30 which I recorded into an audio track however I recorded it a bit too "hot" and there are a few notes, not many - maybe 10 or 12- which are slightly distorted and I was wondering if there is anything in Cakewalk which I can use to edit them out without actually deleting the audio. I would probably try and record it again, but I have since sold the CP-30.
  16. I am using a Cakewalk drum loop from SI-Drums. I had created a groove clip from it and all was fine until a couple of minutes ago when: 1. It now carries on playing for about another 10 seconds after the loop ceases to show any notes in the track. 2. I inserted a separate midi track into which I wanted to drop some drum fills from the sample midi loops from the Cakewalk media browser. These wouldn't play despite being in a separate track. 3. Freezing and unfreezing the SI-Drums track affects the separate midi track inserted for the drum fills. Not sure why this would be...I haven't linked these tracks in any way. Any ideas? EDT
  17. Another issue I am having difficulty with, so any help gratefully received: 1. I record or import some externally recorded audio tracks. 2. I add a virtual bass track and then freeze the synth. 3. To tidy the project up I shift all tracks left in the timeline so they start as close to the start og the timeline as possible. 4. I later wish to correct some slight timing errors in the bass track so I unfreeze it. 5. The midi bass track now shows up in its original possition before 3 above...I am therefore unable to play the other audio tracks and correct the bass track as the audio (the musical reference I need) is no longer playing in synch with the bass track unless I refreeze the bass synth...but then I can't edit the midi notes. Can I change something somewhere (is there a setting?) to ensure this doesn't happen? EDT
  18. I was editing a CWP file that had been edited many times before, without any difficulties. But suddenly one MIDI track stopped to handle copy and cut: if I select notes on this track and try to copy or cut them, nothing happens. This problem occurs in the Staff View as well as in the Piano Roll, and it is the same regardless of I copy/cut with the main menu or with Ctrl C / Ctrl X. The problem affects only one track; the other tracks allow for copy and cut normally. I didn’t find any freezing effect or something like in the track’s properties. Here is a video demonstrating the issue: Attached to this post is the CWP file itself. Track 6 causes problems. How to fix this? nonstop_band.cwp
  19. I use Cakewalk since Pro Audio 9 (circa 1999). I love it and its awesome mixing tools, but I feel in terms of audio editing is not the quicker DAW in the world. As you asked the users for requests... ...these are my basic ones: EASY CLIP GAIN NON-DESTRUCTIVE NORMALIZING QUICKLY ADJUSTABLE SELECTION SELECTION LENGHT INFO (I posted images based on Vegas Pro video editor, because I use it, but these are very common features in DAWs too.) Thanks Cakewalk and BandLab for asking the users👍 MarianoGF::.
