To add to this the “flat” look is intentional. Sonar theming is generally not going for a 3d look on buttons for definition. I suspect thats what you are comparing and finding different. It may take a little getting used to but its not less defined even to my eyes and I’m not young by any stretch of the imagination :)

I am not so sure I will upgrade to Sonar anymore as I much, much preferred the 3d look of SPLAT and CbB. I am particularly disappointed with the appearance of the flat buttons, knobs and sliders. Sigh.........

In some kind of wishful thinking world, I would hope that if enough users would voice their opinion about missing the 3d-ness of SPLAT and CbB, that the Bakers would revert that design decision. But of course, I am aware that this won't happen.

Maybe if the Bakers could have made their early Sonar beta more public and even surveyed us?

    But unfortunately, that's all moot.

It's not a beta - it has been in  ongoing internal beta for over a year. The feature set is complete now and the app is completely usable hence it's being offered for early access as part of the bandlab membership which is not free.

    @Noel Borthwick
    Thanks for those clarifications Noel.
    VERY exciting!
Any ETA as to when it will go out of "early access"?
I am assuming that it will then be available for purchase.
That would be my preference, rather than thru the bandlab membership.

Interlock?  Wasn't this a precursor to iLok?  I have never seen CbB needing any form of iLok or Interlock.

Check in Control Panel,  "Programs and Features" (Start + run appwiz.cpl ) to see if you have any old plugin installed.  There must be something on your PC causing this that is outside of CbB’s control.

Note: Windows 10 has a known incompatibility issue with really older iLok drivers.  They causes a blue screen (even in Windows safe mode.  Some older SONiVOX plugins were known to cause this. The only way out of that one (short of a full Windows clean install) is to boot from a CD Windows repair software and change “TKPD.sys” driver from “boot” to “disabled”.

Thanks. Followed your suggestion and checked in the Control Panel. Nothing DAW/VST/plugins related is on my system.

  4. Thanks and curious indeed.

I am not aware of any DAW/VSTs/plugins installed. Only what CbB was installing.

Maybe going back to installing the latest (purchased) version Sonar Platinum and all its plugins before trying CbB would help?

My system is running W11 Pro latest update with i7 13th gen, 64GB of ram, multiple SSDs,..

  5. Hi,

Installing CbB on a new system and getting an "Initialization Error"

"This software requires installation of the intelLok(R) device drivers and a reboot before running..."

Why is iLok needed on free software?

    Thanks

So, will there be any Staff View updates ?

Staff was one of the most requested and debated feature update in the forum before the CbB days. I was so often outspoken about the regretable state of functionality and UX of Staff and how/what could be upgraded.

Unfortunately it has not gotten any love then and since... That is truly regrettable as of course notation is the "language/alphabet" of music that many musicians know and use.

I always believed this was one of the important reasons all versions of Cakewalk were never considered industry standard. Look at what is offered in Studio One, Cubase,...

I have long given up on hope for a revamped Staff (and no, I never expected anything like Sybellius) but talks of a new Sonar and a /simpler to code' vector based UX has planted a tiny seed of optimism.

  7. Hi,

Looking at getting 2 x 27" monitors on Black Friday.

For the CbB interface, is it better to go for 1080p or1440p?

    Bonus questions:

    - anyone using (dual) curved monitors? If so, thoughts?

    - I don't do video editing (nor gaming). Is it worth getting a refresh rate higher than 60Hz. If so, what refresh rate would you recommend?

    - any specific monitors recommendation?

    Thanks in advance.

    Michael

  8. Thanks Bakers....

I get no one should complain about the pace of continued advancements of a free World Class piece of software such as Cakewalk.

So I will also only leave a kind observation stating that the pace of innovations appears to have slowed down of late. For example, this release took 3 months to bake and only offers 10 bug fixes. This seems to be a first.

Hoping that there is no negative subtext to be read behind this; such as Bandlab reducing ressources on the Bakers' Team...

I consider myself a total keyboard shortcut nerd, but I have actually never used or known about CTRL + D in Windows... great to learn! I've always deleted using the Delete button. 🤓 (Very anecdotal, I know.)

But I do agree with the person who wrote that CTRL+D has become more or less DAW standard for Duplicate. One can always change it.

I would love some more focus on keyboard shortcuts in Cakewalk: improving loading speed of the Options dialog, adding more mouseover popups with currently assigned shortcuts and adding several non-bindable functions (UnSolo All & Archive Track).

I'm loving the commitment and engagement for Cakewalk these days! It's been an enormous increase in a couple years, incredible! ❤️😀

How interesting that some earliler comments in this tread about the Staff View were immediately deleted under the "moved under Feature Requests" and yet many other posts (including the above [nothing against the post writers]) have remained in the tread.

It is like "Staff View" has become "the one that shall not be named" or else....

Very unfortunate as SV lags sooooo far behind other DAWs........

Maybe my account will be banned for bringing this up 😉

  10. Hi,

I created a comprehensive template (about 25 tracks with multiple settings) so I could get going quickly on my new projects. But I am having a strange issue with the said template. When I have different materials recorded in different tracks and I tried to delete a few bars of only one track using the Track View, the same number of bars get also deleted in ALL the other tracks recorded in the project. I did check and only the intended Track is selected when applying the deletion.

Then I tried to replicate the above 'error' but this time starting with a plain/empty template in CbB but everything worked as expected.

So obviously there is a problem with my template but I don't know what it is.

    Any pointers will be appreciated.

  11. Hi,

The way my rig is, I often turnoff my audio interface yet still keep CbB open.

Two things happen every time: get the green toast at the bottom of the screen (Audio Engine Dropout. A dropout has stopped the audio engine.) and get a text message in CbB: " The above Audio/Midi device was disconnected from your system........" and then I have to click Yes or No.

Is there a setting in CbB or in Windows Registry that would allow to stop to above two from happening.

    Thanks

  12. Hi,

Just got a  Studiolive Series III SL16 and don't know much about it yet.

I am using the latest CbB version.

Would really appreciate any hints, links or help so that the SL16 can control CbB.

Also wondering if CbB can control the SL16

    Thanks in advance

    1. Even when you collapse the Multi Dock, the tabs for those "views" should remain visible on the bottom.

    2.  Edit --> Preferences --> File --> VST Settings and un-check "Recycle Plug-In Windows" . If it's checked, CbB will only allow 1 VST instance to be visible at a time.

    3.  It is very common by design that many other Windows application (like CbB or firefox) to not remembering the Fullscreen status when you close the application. Means if you close the application in full screen, the next time you re-launch the application it will open in last opened size without full screen status.

    Hi James,

    Thanks for your quick replies!

    RE:
    1) that's what I thought but when I collapse the Multi Dock (D) a couple of "views" stay tabbed but other "views" just vanished.  Any tips/ideas?
    2) Great! that did the trick!
    3) that's what I thought as well but it is not happening. Any tips/ideas?

  14. Newish CbB user after having more past experience with SPLAT...

Are these bugs or am I missing something in CbB?

    1) when I open several views in the Multidock, a few stay in there when I collapse the dock and many others disappear and I have to recall them from the menus/shortcuts.

    2) I can only have one VST/VSTi window open at a time. For example, the VX-64 window is open and if I open my Rapture window, the VX-64 window disappears. In SPLAT, I used to be able to open many VST/VSTi windows side by side.

    3) Fullscreen/F11 is not persistent between projects or on CbB relaunch. I thought this was supposed to remember the F11 status.

    Thanks in advance

Just a small footnote: I remember reading some discussions about issues and changes to Fullscreen/F11 switching.  Just did a quick search and found this:

    • Full Screen mode now persists globally instead of per project i.e. you can only toggle Full Screen mode via the Full Screen mode button  or by pressing F11. Closing or opening projects or switching workspaces will no longer exit Full Screen mode.

IIRC, there were user problems before this and I think this was the most recent change. If my memory is wrong, someone who knows more than me will probably correct me. (Again, just a small footnote.)

    Thanks...

  16. Hi,

Newish CbB user after having more experience with SPLAT...

I am having an issue where control bar and windows placement/preferences do not stick when I reopen a project in CbB.

It used to be that placement of the control bar (including which modules I selected and their placement within the bar) would be remembered either when starting a new project and re-opening a project. Same with the different windows of a project (eg. console, staff views, etc...).

Is there a new option/setting in CbB that I am missing or is there an issue with my installation?

    Thanks in advance

  17. Hi,

Trying to install CbB (after reinstalling my copy of SPLAT).

Getting error message:  MoveFile failed: code 183

When I clicked on the "Ignore" option, the same error message happens again for several other .exe files

Any tips would be really appreciated.

    Thanks

SOLVED: problem was caused by Malwarebyte. Uninstalled it. Ran CbB again and it worked.
