There is a point where it is better to just get a different computer rather than update the current one.
Big Plus One to that sentiment.
Perhaps some sort of a "new minimum spec" for @RICHARD HUTCHINS would help, with some kind of budget in mind. Some of us have money to chuck at stuff like this but some don't. Would be nice to know what you could do on a tight budget.
And even though I am a massive laptop fanboy I have just this week pulled the trigger on a new desktop. So could be that a budget desktop might be an even better idea, unless the OP really does have a need to be "mobile."

Is this to do with a lack of processing power?
Probably.
Full spec?
i3? i5? i7?
Not a lot of RAM either.
How big is your swap file?
Do I sound like I know what I am doing?
I don't, but others will be along shortly who do...

Is it English tea
My missus is into all that weird infusion stuff. Not to my taste. But we do have English Breakfast and my preference is Earl Grey (without the lemon, usually cos I don't have it in stock). Missus uses honey, so you can have some of that, I'm sure she won't mind...
Couch? Who said I could afford a couch! Spent it all on computers and stuff.
Crash cushions will have to do I'm afraid.

Ah, okay, you know more than me Mr Grem
When I was spec'ing up my new workstation there was an option for Optane Memory but there was a note against it "use with mechanical HDD."
Hence my misunderstanding above.
Watching the LTT video...

It's these fundamental basics that make people move on.
I guess so, although it's been a while since I have played with Cakewalk. And by "a while," I mean four or five days. My brain ain't what it used to be and I often forget what I was doing yesterday. So I can't truly judge Cakewalk without going back over what I was doing. May have been something I was doing wrong. I had already misunderstood how to correctly set up External Insert, which was causing me some strange latency issues.
Trouble is, I was on a roll with REAPER before trying Cakewalk and so it is kind of easier, and very lazy of me to fall back on that again.
I was pointed to Inta Audio last week by a well respected member of these forums, with respect to building a new workstation, so I would say that they are all above board.
I see they are offering Studio One Pro 4 for £299 compared to PreSonus £344, so, yeah, good deal that. Strange thing is, it seems to be linked to a "Black Friday" deal so may be that when you try to check out it will revert to the previous price... Let me know how you get on, and good luck
cheers

Do you want to sell/transfer your licence??
Good question, but I think I would be reluctant to let go of it.
I'm currently leaning more towards REAPER right now... I'm sure it was just me but I, too, have problems trying to get my hardware and software working together using Cakewalk. There is only so much time you can spend on that process...
cheers

I've seen this a few times in past couple weeks.
I can loop a 4 or 8 beat guitar part for 100 measures in under a couple minutes. Im not saying im cool or anything, im just saying its fairly easy when snap is selected.
- Make sure your snap is set to 1/2 or Whole.
- Drag/Select the 8 bar region
- Hold CNTRL and Drag to copy/paste.
- Once you have 2 done it becomes easier / Select both clips Drag and drop using Copy/paste.
- then there's 4 parts easily copy/pasted into 8 parts (then 16, then 32, then 64, exc).
This is how I create so called "loops."
Never did like matrix. Not that it's a bad thing, I am just inherently lazy and I've been using the drag and drop copying method for quite a while before matrix view was implemented.

Is my laptop up to it? Cakewalk is crashing

Well, if it's "just " audio you want to record you could use a four track hard disk recorder or something. I've got two, though I never use them because I much prefer to "see" stuff, and editing on a traditional recording device is a bit of a backward step in my opinion.
