  1. scook Vocals were recording fine before I played with the vocoder. Would using Vocoder have changed those settings? I wouldn't know what those settings should be or were before, but I can play around with them if that's the best way to debug this problem. Also, I just tried removing TAL Vocoder form the VST folder, re-scanned VST plugins (it showed 1 Removed) and I tried recording again. I got the same garbled vocals.
  2. I opened Windows Sound Recorder and I did a test recording there, and the vocals sound fine that way.
  3. I've been recording vocals with no problems. Today I was playing with TAL vocoder. Now I closed that project and opened an old project that does not have the TAL Vocoder. I had recorded vocals in that project with no problem last week. I connected my microphone and recorded a new vocal clip and the vocals are all garbled. I can hear it is the words, but it sounds like you put The Chipmunks in a blender. Does this have anything to do with the TAL Vocoder? I closed Cakewalk, re-opened it and the project, recorded another vocal clip and I still get the garbled vocals. My next step is to uninstall TAL Vocoder, but I would rather not do that. Is there a solution that anyone can suggest? Maybe it's not related to the vocoder, but it's the obvious suspect.
  4. That's what I suspected. I wish there was a way to use the same vocal track twice (once for the vocoder and once for the dry vocal) so that I don't have to make a duplicate audio track, but I haven't found it. I also found a way to improve the vocoder a little (perhaps). I was using the internal synthesizer in the vocoder which is a traditional vocoder sound. Now I am routing the signal to a synth in Cakewalk and I am testing the different voices in the synth. Some voices produce a more intelligent speech than others, although it's still not as clear as a human voice. I may do as you suggest and feed in a little of my dry auto-tuned voice along with the vocoder synth and I may be happier with that than just a dry vocal (if it's enough to be worth the extra work).
  5. Is part of the purpose of the vocoder to make the words difficult to understand, because if it is, they succeeded? In that case, has someone invented something that does what I want? We could name it the vocoworder. I've tried using Melodyne auto tune but my old voice is so bad it I can't smooth it out with auto tune at max.
  6. I've got the Tal Vocoder working in a song I recorded, and it makes my vocals much more pleasing to the ear, but the words are not very clear. Is trying to mix a copy of the dry vocal the only solution? That will bring back what I wanted to avoid, but it may be my only choice. I've tried playing with the sliders and buttons in Tal Vocoder and I haven't found a setting that helps much. It seems like the best setting is to move all the Carrier sliders up all the way as shown below, but it still isn't very clear.
  7. scook Update. I went into the Security tab and the user named Users did not have Write permissions. So as you suggested I added that permission to Users and went back to Cakewalk and I was able to select the custom preset that I saved. Problem solved. Thanks again.
  8. scook I just looked at the Shared Plugins ini files and it looks like they already are not read only. I did not change the setting yet. Any ideas?
  9. scook Thanks for the quick reply. So after I set those file permissions is the Add Preset button the way to save my custom setting?
  10. I have some custom FX settings I would like to re-use. I see the Add Preset option in the dialog box. I tried creating a preset based on the settings I was using and I saved them in Ensemble (for the Modulator). But when I open a new project and try to select that new preset it's not there. Is it possible to do what I am trying to do?
  11. Thanks. I was hoping this Groove Clip pitch marker did something like a chord track, but I guess not. Maybe I could write a CAL program to do what I need, but right now I don't need it enough to put in that work. I can do a semi-work around by transposing measures to adapt to chord changes, but I will still have to clean up the major/minor chord differences.
  12. I read a little about using pitch markers with MIDI Groove clips. I'd like to be able to load multiple groove clips into a project and have them adjust to chord changes. I found where the use of pitch markers is described in the reference guide and I created a test project to test that function (screenshot below). I created a simple MiDI Groove clip with the melody shown and inserted 4 pitch markers. When I play it back it does raise the pitch of the notes as indicated by the markers. However, there it always follows the same exact melody; it doesn't adjust the notes for major and minor chords. In this example I would like it to play D major followed by E minor but it plays E major. There doesn't seem to be any way to tell it E minor in the pitch markers. Question: Can the pitch marker be adjusted to major/minor and, if not, how is it useful in the real world? I can see it would be useful for a simple one note bass line or a 1/5 chord pattern, but not much else.
  13. I've asked a lot of questions here that could be answered in the users manual. Cakewalk has one and it's very thorough. The one shortcoming I see is the Table of Contents is unwieldy. There are about 40 pages in the Table of Contents and when I go to look for a topic it overwhelms me. I've tried using the Index and that helps sometimes, but sometimes I struggle with that, too. I've tried searching the Reference Guide for specific words and that is a slow process at times. In my current search I need an overview of the Groove Clips. So I decided to cut the Table of Contents down to size for my use. I created a text file listing only the Table of Contents "chapter headings" that are in blue. I've attached a copy of the text file, if anyone else wants to use it. It's about one page long. I can find general areas at a glance. Now I can easily see that if I want to learn more about Groove Clips a good place to start is on page 763. Table Of Contents.txt
  14. I was adding some markers at the top of my track view and I noticed on the Insert Marker dialog box there is a drop down box for Groove Clip Pitch. It's lets you select a pitch from A to G#. I'm looking for a way to change the chord for a measure/bar and have it automatically adjust the pitch of the notes in multiple tracks without the need to edit them by hand. Does this do the trick? Is there some other way to do that? I thought it might be the famous Chord Track in some other DAWs, but maybe that is something different. I've never worked with a Chord Track.
  15. Never mind. I figured this out. Maybe I should delete this question, but I will explain if someone else may have this question in the future. Scott's reply above is correct. I was demoing the clips in the Media library window (screenshot below). In that window the pitch bend is set to 2 semi-tones. When you drag the clip onto a MIDI track it will bend based on the bend range set in the VST (Kontakt in my case). So if I want to have different pitch bends in my project I will need to set Kontakt's bend range to the maximum and then adjust the amount of bend in the clip to use all or part of that range. So, does anyone know if the amount of bend (0 - 8192) is a straight line or a curve? That is, if I set my max bend range to 4 semi-tones and I only want to raise a note 2 semi-tones (one half), would I set the max value to 4096 or some other value? Are there maybe some pre-programmed MIDI clips on the Internet that already set wheel events to partial bends? I'm looking at taking a full bend and editing the events one at a time, which I don't want to do.
  16. I'm trying to record notes with pitch bend (wheel events). I'm using a Kontakt guitar simulator and I see how to change the pitch bend range in Kontakt, but it seems to be limited to 2 semi-tones when I record the wheel events. I did some research and I read where in a few places it says Cakewalk that defaults to 2 semi-tones for pitch bend range, but I can't find how to change that (raise it). Below is a description about using V-Vocal pitch-to-MIDI in the Cakewalk documentation, but I don't think that applies to recording on a MIDI track: Pitch Bend Range. This setting is used to specify the pitch bend range to use when converting fine pitch changes to MIDI. The Pitch Bend Range value is specified in semitones and the range is 1-24. The default value is 2 semitones. Can someone tell me how I can set the pitch bend range higher than 2 semitones?
  17. Is there any update on adding a chord track to Cakewalk? Are there any work arounds like an third party add-on chord track?

    Saving Clips

scook Thanks for the reply. I got that to work, but it's a little clunky. After I found the MIDI Library folder in Windows I was able to add a folder named Guitar (see screenshot below). Then I dragged a clip and I tried to drop it in the new folder, but it always lands in the parent folder and it gives it a generic name. I can rename the clip in that window but I can't drag it into the Guitar folder. I have to go back to Windows Explorer and drag it there. Is that the way this works or am I missing something? This is good enough and I tested that I can drag a copy back into my Midi track. Thanks, Steve

    Saving Clips

I'm thinking about re-using clips that I've created which are labor intensive so I can re-use them in other songs. There's probably an easy way to do this. Below is a screenshot of a guitar clip and the Media Library (if that's the correct name). In particular I have created a finger picking pattern I want to re-use for guitars (there's both a Major and a Minor version). I am also recording some guitar note bends on my keyboard with the pitch wheel and I want to clean them up and re-use them easily. There would probably be versions of different bend ranges and durations. So is there an easy way to add them into the clip library and maybe even create my own folders in the library?
  21. New year, new album. I'm starting a new album and I'm looking for suggestions about how to work faster. It's not that I'm in a hurry as much as I feel like there's a lot of repetitive steps in setting up a new song that can be templated. I have already created a basic template which has the instruments and plug-ins that I use regularly already set up and labeled. (It's almost like having a band at my ready) As I brainstormed this process I think I can save a lot of repetitive work by adding to that template the basic sections laid out in the Arranger. The last few songs I worked on, I first created music for those sections and then I used the Arranger to lay out copies into a complete song. Then I edited the song as needed. Are there other tips you use or are the some good articles you've read that have tips like that?
  22. No. My name really is Steve. Are you a fan of Debbie?
  23. That's funny, but no. My Dallas comment meant that those two were also from Dallas like me, but the other artist with a name like mine was not from Dallas.
  24. I submitted an album to CD Baby 4 days ago and they have already approved it for distribution. It's the first time I've done this and I thought they might reject some songs for possible infringement (not intentional) or maybe a problem on my artwork or maybe even a conflict with my band name. (I have a fairly famous music name and its not Steve Miller or Stevie Ray Vaughan, also from Dallas) But, there were no problems which is good. Is that the norm? Have others here had submissions rejected and they had to make some changes or is their review process pretty perfunctory?
  25. I went back an listened again. I agree. The bass is lost in the mix. On most of my songs the bass is more prominent, without being too strong, I think. I'll try to watch for that in the future and I will probably remix this at some point.
