    Dear Lynn Sir,

Great Music track and I am in love with it.... Great blend of guitar & Piano... I wanted to amlify a new song I am listening to... any suggestion how I can... Asking this question as I feel you have great expertize in music...

Holy cow! First, thanks for your kind words, and welcome to the forum!  Now, let me say something about this terrific video you've posted.  I've never heard anything quite like this (at least, recently), and it's capable of being one of the freshest sounds going with a little different approach to the mix.  I like almost every part of this song, from the arrangement to the vocals and lyrics.  You have a very nice choice of instruments that are well balanced and played.  Where I get lost is in the chorus (You can be my Sally) because the kick drum(?) builds up in that section and becomes a bit muddled,  It may be due to delay or reverb, but it seemingly throws the timing off a bit, and if it's caused by a delay f/x then it might be synced better.  Anyway, this is pretty good now, but this can be stellar, and I thank you for introducing it!  You should post this on its own so that all can hear your talent and welcome you here.  The song just fits these times so well.

  2. I kind of agree that this could use a little punch in the drums as I'm listening a low volume, but it's a toss-up.  All in all, a hard hitting production with highly professional performances on guitar and vocals.  I really like your sound!

I like the lead on the left, I've always loved the sound of your vocal..

Thank you Joad!  Sometimes I put the lead on the right, too ;)  Thanks for the kind words about my vocals.

    Hi Lynn

Nice Guitar work - agree perhaps a little too panned, but other than that, like this a lot - great job

    Nigel

Thanks, Nigel!  I just can't seem to pin that guitar player down, but glad you like the song.  Just keep coming up with your own great songs.

  4. A song as good as this deserves the best treatment you can give it, and you've made this much better!  The only thing that stands out to me is the drums, and I think they just need some attention to dynamics so as not to sound too static.  Sometimes it's just a matter of reducing the volume on certain hits, or varying the volume a tad, like on the snare.  However, this is a good song, with a very good vocal, and it sort of sells itself and puts you in the spotlight.

  5. Wow!  I would like to have produced this myself.😞  The fusion of styles and moden production techniques are crafty and spell binding at the same time.  There is much depth in this piece, and you can't eat just one of them.  Bass is outstanding!

Not now @Lynn, previously it sounded like you had use a plugin to create extra width so here the guitar sound to the left of the left speaker. it now sits just to the right of the left speaker.  If that makes sense. ;)

You do have good ears -  I was using Izotope's imager software to widen the stereo field (as I do on most of my songs).  I'll keep this in the back of my mind in the future.  Thanks to your furry ears once again.

  7. This is the kind of song that could be interpreted in many ways, much like some of the Rolling Stones early ballads.  To me, the  vintage vibe is strong and convincing.  It sounds like the backup vox is strong on character but a little light on clarity.  Yet, it all works to create a color, or flavor that is pleasing!  Nice work, Steve!

Also the Beatles and many bands when they only had 2 or 4 tracks.  It is your track and your mix for me it just felt like it pushed it outside of the mix which is why I mentioned it.

Yes, of course you're right about the fact that they  had limited tracks.  I did remix this song and pushed the guitar to 50%L and the piano to 50%R to pull the parts together, I hope.  Do you think it's still too wide?  I don't mind playing with this mix.  Thanks for your time!

  9. Steve, it's good to hear your haunting voice and great lyrics!  I absolutely love this song and will be listening to it some more.  Sometimes your voice reminds me of Paul Simon, and this is one of those times.  Wow!

  10. Your songs and mixes are some of the very best I've heard in a while.  It's as if the Jefferson Airplane landed in the 21st century, but better!  Keep inspiring us!

    Lynn,
Fine tune overall, really like the changes; well done. Very topical, another plus.
Would I mix this a bit different, yeah I'm thinking my mix would be much different.
Am I "right" and your mix is "wrong"? No, no-no, no-no, no!

Dropped a "like" over at SounClick.

I'll hold the "like" here for the final mix....

Tom, I appreciate your comments and time.  I did remix this just now, and I put the guitar at 50% L and the piano at 50% R to give each channel some balance of energy.  I also turned the vocal compressor down for a bit more clarity (I hope).  I find all the comments helpful, especially because my ears aren't as sharp as they used to be.

Mixes are like elbows. Stuff sticks out sometimes, other times it's tucked in.

Cool tune, kinda noir-ish in a way. I'd say the guitar is fine - just lower the bass and the piano!

When you get that crushed compression on the vocals, in spots it's a bit too cooked for my taste, but usually it works great - that's a great vocal performance by the way.

    c heers,

    -Tom

Hi Tom, thanks for replying!  I just began wondering about the vocal compression, too.  I think I need to turn down the compressor a bit, and maybe the bass and piano, too.

I'm still trying to figure out what the lyrics are all about, but I like it when I can't. Just have to go back and listen again and pick up another clue.
I did notice the guitar panning but didn't think about it much since you have the other instruments situated so well in the stereo field. Nice choice of intruments too - gives the song a fuller sound. Love the guitar which accompanies the vocal really well. Great job Lynn.

Bjorn, thanks for your kind words!  Back story:  I have some millennial friends that are suffering in isolation, and this song arose from their difficulties in coping with being in lockdown.  Much to write about these days.

Lynn , very good job .  Kept my interest and enjoyed it to the end. As far as the lead panning , I normally pan a lead slightly to the right, always have and sounds normal to me. Nice guitar work , Enjoyed it ..  mark

Mark, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!  I love your work.

Yes, centre the guitar and keyboard a tad closer and you're there! :)

Mahavishnu, I remember hearing an orchestra by that name in the 70's.  After hearing your stellar work, I'm pleased to hear your comment.  I guess I just like to take advantage of stereo like they did in the day when it was new.  I'm always looking for a cure ;)

That's a cool song Lynn - I always enjoy your vocal. I think I agree with Michael regarding the lead guitar sections when you're not singing - perhaps pan them to the center. Besides that, I think the mix is quite good.

Thank you, Douglas!  You're not alone about the guitar panning.

Mix works OK here though the Guitar is a panned a little extreme.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Wookie!  There seems to be a consensus about the guitar panning.  It's not so unusual if you've heard "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Cream ;)

  15. Hi Michael, it's good to hear from you.  Thanks for your kind response, especially about the lyrics!  I know what you mean about the guitar solos being off to the side, but I was looking for separation from the keyboards, so there they are.  It's not set in stone so thanks for your observation, who knows where it will end up.

  16. Hello to all my friends!  Hope you're all staying healthy and putting your time to good use.  Here's my latest opus on the Coronavirus, done with the help of my good friend Roger Fife on bass.  It's still very new, so I'm open to all suggestions.  As always, thanks for your help and observations.

It can be found here: https://soundclick.com/r/s8d34x

Remixed 6/12/20:  Moved guitar from 70L to 50L, and moved piano from 30R to 50R.  I also lowered the volume on the bass a bit.

  17. Mark, this is a fabulous song that seems to transcend Nashville.  It could stand as is, or be a starting point.  Best of luck to you and thanks for sharing!

  18. I've always liked the way you leave it all out there, and this song does that in spades!  I've not heard a song from you that I don't like, so you're on to something.  Keep up with the raw energy and passion, I think it's your trademark.
