Sounds like what you would get if you normalised a selection where that selection has no discernible audio present.  It is simply raising the noise floor because that is all that is present.

    Is this a multi-track project?

Is there a some auto normalising along with some gating going on in the signal chain somewhere?

Hello, it actually is a single track project.  I found that it does happen when there is a static spike that I can see in the wavelength.  Then when I normalize it increases.  You can still hear it previously before the normalization.

Oddly had not encountered this before.  Wonder about energy surge, but again never revealed itself until now with the same setup.

So what exactly are you using for audio equipment, that might narrow it down. Are you using an audio interface or a USB mike etc??

It almost sounded like an ambient recording of traffic in a city? Is there a start and end of a clip at that point?

Using an audio interface, AKG D5 mic.  It appears there is some kind of static spike in the wavelength that seems to expand when a part of the portion is normalized.

  3. No plugins were used.  Here is the noise in question.  Sometimes it at the beginning of recordings.  Do you still think it might be a plug-in though I am not using any plugins, just straight recording voice.  It sounds like a vaccum cleaner.

  4. Hello,

I am experiencing random white noise.  I am not sure if it happens after I nomalize or not.  I didn't find out until later.  Trying to track down the culprit.  It there is just random static sprinkled throughout the recording.  Any ideas?  I did  search, but couldn't find anything that dealt with the random white noise.  This is premix down.

What would be helpful then is a screen shot of the Preferences/ Audio/Device list in ASIO mode.

As far as I can see in Asio4all you seems to have way more inputs than that device actually has. According the videos and looking at the device it has 4 XLR, 2 Combi and then the 2 built in mikes for a total of 8 inputs.   So this make perfect sense as the device is called an 8 track recorder. ASIO4all seems to think there are 12.  So this must be either typical asio4all mistake or those represent 12 tracks, not inputs. This is why I I mentioned this in the first post.

I have a hunch this is a Zoom ASIO driver issue if not all the inputs show in Cakewalk but without the screen shot I am only speculating.  Cakewalk can only show what the driver presents. Zoom has a reputation for not supplying stellar ASIO drivers.

FYI, asio4all is not an ASIO driver, it is actually a wrapper for WDM mode and because we now have WASAPI modes in W10, asio4all is not recommended as it's performance is sub par to WASAPI. Your tracks will most likely have syncing issues.

If there is an ASIO driver, use it.. if it's not working properly, contact the manufacture and demand an update that repairs any issues.

Zoom makes awesome stuff, I have a few products and so do people I know. But the audio interface part has never been solid.

Thanks for your help.  Apparently, the Zoom H8 is more comparable with Intel and is hit or miss with AMD USB ports.  Therein was the problem.

It would be a good idea to actually read the user manual.

The ASIO Driver will show you the available live inputs. Don’t get that mixed up with tracks. The tracks get transferred once recorded to the device, not live.
Do you see 12 inputs? No.

You should totally remove asio4all from your computer. Always use the ASIO driver when supplied

    Ummm...thanks for your response?  Lol.

    1. In multi track mode the DAW used IS suppose to recognize the live inputs available which I had split up in the different tracks.

2.I have read the manual and I assume the tech I am work with have also, but not necessarily all improvements in CBB, which was why I posted in the first place.

3.As I stated before the ASIO driver they supplied did not provide any usable inputs when in multi track mode(6 in,2out).

4.What ASIO4All provided was a signal where I could inputs to the various tracks.  I am sure I am not confused in that manner, what I am unsure of is how to get the remaining inputs coming through so that I can run the 6 tracks rather than the maybe 4 that I am getting.

5.At the time I had 3 mics plugged in not including the X/Y, but only getting a inputs of 2 of the mics.  These mics will record on the H8, but in multi track only the two come through.

  7. Hello Everyone,

I have been working with tech, but wondered if community might be able to assist.  I bought the H8 wanting to use the multitrack option of the interface, upto 12 sound input options.  I am basically getting 4. (Driver 1(which is X/Y), Driver 5 ( XLR Input 1 on H8), Driver 7 (XLR Input 3) and Driver 11(mixdown of all)   I am using the ASIO driver they supplied, but when I do Cakewalk wouldn't recognize an input.  So I install ASIO4ALL it seems that it sort of works putting the two together?   What I want to do is utilize the multitrack function for the audio interface, but I am not able to get all the inputs recognized.  Anyone have this problem with the H6?  Ideas?

  8. Thanks.  Yes, I knew about the peak normalization, but it doesn't help with RMS normalization which is a standard for narration.  I had search in the past  for this (RMS normalization requests) and it kinda went nowhere, but I wanted to mention it again.  Right now I believe Adobe Audition has it and I use it in Audacity.  I just wanted to eliminate that extra step.

Regarding truncating silence, I had seen the remove silence function.  I will take another look at it.  Thanks.

  9. From a vocal narration point of view it would be extremely helpful to have a RMS normalization feature and also a way to truncate silence by track.  These are some very helpful tools in Audacity that would be nice to have in CBB.  I have seen others ask for this in the past and wanted to keep this request happening so that it is not forgotten.

  10. Looks like Richard Gagne has the same problem.  Is there somewhere to download this portion?  I too am without this portion.  I uninstalled then reinstalled it, but to no avail.  Patrick did you find any resolve in the matter?

Thanks, Nigel - I cold have sworn I copy/pasted @msmcleod's directory path from his post into the Windows File Explorer bar, so I don't know how I ended up taking a screen shot of C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\Internal!

I think I've solved the mystery, however. It's a bit embarrassing, but if it serves as a lesson to anyone else then I don't mind admitting to it. When my SSD C: drive started to get low on disk space a couple of years ago, I hived off everything 'non essential' to another HDD, including C:\Cakewalk Content. I must have changed the crucial folder locations in Cakewalk's preferences correctly, because the program carried on working the same as before.

That would explain why C:\Cakewalk Content\Cakewalk Core\Style Dial FX was empty when I checked. I had hoped that copying the hived-off content back to the folder and then closing and re-opening Cakewalk would fix the problem, but no dice - I've still got no Style Dial modules in ProChannel. Is there a DLL I can re-register which will fix the issue? Much obliged for the ongoing help!

  11. Hey Everyone,

How do you  adjust the speed for fast playback.  I wanted to look over tracks without listening to them at full speed.  I looked this up on line and apparently there was something in the older version, but I haven't found anything to steer me in the right direction for the current version of CbB

  12. Wow!  Thanks a bunch.  That was it.   Mystery solved.  That is exactly how I would edit.  Move the view along the time  ruler with the magnifier then highlight it.  So now I wonder if  I have to use the keyboard shortcuts to move it and magnify it if I go low to highlight the clip? Have to relearn a new system.

  13. Hey Mandolin Picker,

Thanks for the suggestion, however, I only put it on Ripple Edit Selection.  I am not sure what the difference is but that is the one I use.  If it is switching to the other I wonder why.  I end up having to click on the track number I am still working on other wise it highlights all of the tracks and will cut those as well.  Any other suggestions.  Is there something I am doing.

As the man said above. A Wave editor was designed from the ground up just to edit a stereo wave file so it is optimized for working with that sort of material. And once you learn your way around which ever version you choose you could never use something like a DAW to edit a stereo file..  DAW's are for multi track and a Wave editor is for your 2 track.

A method of working with audio books or spoken word is to have the narrator stop cold if they make an error, wait a few seconds and start over. The pause in the dialog is very visible when editing.  You then listen to the pick up words and quickly scroll back find them and delete. All can be done in seconds especially if you have a script.

You can use CbB for multitrack as in doing multiple auditions for audiobooks and voiceovers and the like.  The Magnifying  glass that pops up where you can move the timeline or go in really close to the wavelength makes it really fast.  The issue I am having is that when cropping or ripple editing I can't get the edit to stay on the track I am working on.  It tries to apply the cut or delete to the tracks below or above it.  Is there something that you have to mark to nake it stay on one track, rather than keep clicking on the track number each time you are working on the same track?Insert other media

  15. So I do voiceovers, which means I do multiple tracks when auditioning and when doing audiobook chapters I have multiple tracks to edit.  I recently started using Cakewalk, but am having a problem where when i make a cut in one track i have to keep clicking on that tracks number as not to delete a portion of track beneath it.  This is even if I have other tracks muted and archived.  How do you work with CbB so that the track you are working on doesn't affect the other tracks?  So any videos that would work with voiceover work would be helpful.
