Someone decided to make this about semantics?  I looked at the photo.  You would get this message if you do not have the program installed, So they only available file was the update.  An official full installer has already been discussed.  He had to solve it by someone giving him the full version.

    I think

Well I just thought it was weird that the dates were the same-NEW Sonar and the very last cwby BL BOTH  2024.02.........No biggie really.

I’m just paying the monthly membership fee for now as Noel just said that it’s looking like only a few more  months .

And we were told a million times over that CbB will be kept going long enough to allow a smooth transition to Sonar. So it will be very doubtful they would disable it for a while yet.
My guess is Sonar release in June and CbB fading away by the Fall. If it all happens sooner all the better.
I was even thinking I should just uninstall CbB but it’s doing no harm.

John- I hear what you are saying but I have NEVER heard a guarantee that Sonar will be SOLD, as in retail purchase  before CWBL is ended.

That is what I meant. I will believe the Sonar Release (NOT SUBSCRIPTION) when I see it! as stated- I am hoping that's how it works out.........

For sure, folks who love the software will pay, I never believed free could be sustainable . . . I'm just saying, looks like it's moving towards more of a partnership with BandLab, brand new marketing plan, and Cakewalk will have to re-join the reality of the DAW wars, and find and develop new features to stay afloat.

Trust me, I want CW\Sonar to survive and flourish-Honestly!

Anyways, it's a chance to support BandLab, who have offered an amazing free DAW for 5 years, ain't that worth something ? . . . especially if you want to continue working on your existing, and older projects.

NOPE. Do you really believe the plan was not to have a viable product to SELL at some point? Of course it was. Also, nothing wrong with that-smart business!

So in my opinion CW by BL has had over 4 years to come up with a sales plan.

Also, I imagine NONE of the long time CW users like me (35 yrs) and many others didn't ask or care that it was free.

I would have gladly paid for it. Just sayin!

Please clarify. I can't tell if you're questioning my experiences or if your expressing dismay at BandLab's actions. As for me, I have no idea what's going on at BandLab. I'm just adding some insight into how some companies I've been involved with have made product decisions.

Comment is about Bandlab, NOT you. Yes your post prompted the post "about Bandlab", hence the quote. A stated by others much too much coming soon ...............
    Nothing personal intended.

In my experience this is done before development begins in earnest. A business needs to know the size of the market, competition, pricing, feature set and cost of development  before the first shovel full of dirt is turned. Bandlab may not have decided what sales model to implement but they almost certainly know what the numbers are.

Guess they just haven't had enough time yet? Really?

  7. Well, I guess I can say no more. I'm done and I'll just wait and see if I will be using New Sonar or not.
Will have to brush up on studio One and reaper. Although I am more familiar with Reaper.
Feel like I am leaving an old friend, well I am.
Wish it was different but I honestly believe they will stick with their subscription scheme and the hell with the rest of us 30+ years Cakewalk Users............

I was actually warned in another forum that I frequent years ago that this would happen. I argued for CW and said no way. They may have subscriptions but they also will sell it to us...........Guess they were right and I was wrong.    😞

  8. We all know we DO NOT OWN the software. That's been a thing, like forever.
The development of Sonar is obviously pretty much done. Yes updates will be needed down the road.
I get it's a bit more complicated than JUST a Subscription.
Some how these other DAW companies miraculously manage to do it-offer both I mean-Or just sell!

  9. I don't claim to be a big business guy, but I don't get the, backend issues and extra $$$ cost if you , say, sell a perpetual license and subscriptions. It has been stated a few times so far.

So what are we talking here, the price of boxes and postage? So make it a download only. Serve cost.
Accountants to track sales vs subscriptions? I think accounts can handle both, we are not talking Microsoft Corp.here.
I still just do NOT see the logic in this decision. John V's post above and fine video shows that most daws and software companies SELL. Some subscribe and sell.  Cool idea!
FEW just subscribe. Just amazes me.
Also, I mentioned this before, Yes it was great having CW free with updates. But I am pretty sure the $$$ I spent on CW and ALL upgrades since the early 90's (I always upgraded to the end) kind of balances it out.
    Oh well..........

    No worries!

I think it'll be interesting if more of us have a mess around with it and report our thoughts.

I get the feeling quite a lot of posts are coming from people who've just seen screen shots. And that's valid, of course. But I've found that using it has changed my mind about a lot of my initial screen shot impressions.

So they both install to the original CW directory? Just checking.  Thanks and sorry but I couldn't find the answer.

  11. For me, I guess you would say it's a matter of principle. Right or wrong it is how I, Frank, feel.
Also the only reason I keep mentioning it is because of my preference for CW\Sonar, etc.
Trust me, it's not an easy thing.
