I’m not sure what genre is targeted here but it has really amazing musical theater / broadway energy.  It was a very nice piece…

    Thanks David.

    Hi Jerry..
Depends what you want to do with it.
I don't think it distracted from the artist communication at all.
If you want to send me the vocal..  I might be able to fix it for you.

    Gary

Thanks, I appreciate the offer. I want to first talk to Leandra (the singer) to see what she thinks.  Personally  I don't think it's a problem at all but I don't want others to think it is if it detracts from the piece.  On the other hand, my critics are going to be my critics no matter what I do, so there's that to consider!

Jerry, just what I needed to get my mind off politics and return to what's really important. Love the music and the vocalist.

So you kind of inspired me to dabble in astrophotography, though not to the extent that you do. I bought a SeeStar S50, a "smart" telescope that does just about everything for you. I've been able to get some fairly nice images of deep sky objects from my back yard which just blows my mind. Had no idea that could be done.

    Hi Bjorn,

New technology is making astrophotography a bit easier.    The most difficult challenge I faced are the sky conditions where I live in San Francisco, California.  Nearly constant fog and wind (I don't live far from the coast) became very discouraging.  So I put my 130mm refractor at a dark sky site in New Mexico, about 900 miles from where I live and I control everything now remotely by computer.  I don't have to carry equipment and set up every time I image, it's all ready to go on a permanent pier.

    Glad you enjoyed the piece!

Hi Jerry I'm just listening on my Focal Trio system.
So you knew it was there... I didn't until I heard it  🙂
I checked again... without the hard disk going at the time as I was copying something to HDD
My  C drive SSD so I wont get it from there.
(That's good... shows my system is working well  🙂)

I am learning how to critical listen.

I didn't want to detract from your composition.. and my question about your reverb was because I liked it.
I also agree with your comments on your singers ability.
Great job and I have always liked your work.

    Gary

    Hey Gary,

Do you think I should ask my vocalist to re-record the places where there's some clipping?  Did it detract from the artistic communication?  I'm wondering because if you heard it others with trained ears will also...

    Thanks,

    Jerry

From the symptom, I'd say that the instrument is trying to use data that it doesn't have fast enough access to. After playing through the first time, it's been cached, so no problem. We trace it upstream to see what's going on.

@Jerry Gerber, when you say that the non-DAW system is dedicated to the Vienna Symphonic Orchestral Cube, what exactly to you mean by that?

Are you using the dedicated system as you would an external MIDI synth, where you send MIDI data to it and route the audio back to the DAW system? I assume that the cellos and basses are being played back by the VSOC system.

If so, that narrows it down to the issue being with that system, since the DAW is just telling it to play the note. Does this project use the VSOC for instruments that occur before the cellos and basses kick in (probably so).

You're loading samples from an SSD, so inherent disk transfer speed shouldn't be a bottleneck. Have you tried running your SSD diagnostics? The programs that you download from the drive's manufacturer, that is.

When the glitch happens, is it the first time in the project that those instruments (or specific articulations) are used in the project? If you turn on the system(s) and play a cello or bass note from your controller before loading the project, do you get the same glitch? If so, that might indicate an issue with loading those specific samples, but if not, it could be that it only happens when VSOC loads all of the other samples first. It may be out of room for pre-loading.

Finally, what does Vienna's support forum have to say about it?

Thank yo Starship Krupa for responding.   Yeah, other instruments are playing, including cellos and basses before the glitch happens.  I'll have to check to see of the articulation that has the glitch was played earlier in the piece.  I mean that the 2nd computer is dedicated only the VSOC samples.  It's connected via MIDI over LAN, with the DAW sending MIDI data to the 2nd computer which plays back the samples and sends the audio over ADAT back to the DAW.

I'll investigate further and I posed on VSL's forum.  I am not sure if VSL is even supporting the Cube anymore...

    Very nice Jerry
What reverb system do you use?
When I listen some parts of the vocal is there clipping/peaking on the compression/limiter? 02.13 +
Could be my system as my disk is working a little-- will check again later.

    Hi Gary,

Yes, I think there is a very tiny amount of clipping at that point.  I discussed with my vocalist and we decided it wasn't enough to re-record the track.  Your system may also be contributing as I am listening right now over headphones on my laptop and to my ear it's not enough to detract from her expression and beautiful voice.  I don't think it's the reverb (Lexicon plate plugin) but rather in the recording itself.   We took 8 takes of that section and the one I chose is the best overall in terms of expression, phrasing and diction.  Leandra has a very powerful voice (she sings with the San Francisco Opera)!   I had my compression set to 4:1, kicking in at -2dB, but somehow her voice overwhelmed it  As the saying goes, the perfect is the enemy of the good, so unless we can re-record it at another time, I will leave it for now.

By the way, if you are listening with Dolby Atmos, it will definitely cause issues.  Atmos screws up every recording I make. Unless a recording is made with it, it absolutely sucks.  I turned it off on my laptop as it's useless for music that is recorded without it.

    Best,

    Jerry

    That was stunning!

I’ve been a huge fan since the first time I heard your work. Your midi orchestration is always amazing. You’ve upped your game on the video side. And the vocal on this is outstanding!

    So beautiful…

    👍’s 👏

Are you using a VSTi that is actively pulling samples "as needed" at that point in the project... such as a VSTi that first comes online at measure 69? Once those samples are loaded into RAM, they will persist for the session, but when first loaded that glitch may be from pulling the samples into RAM.

That sounds plausible.  I'll have to check to see if the VSL player has an option to load all samples at startup.  I'm pretty sure though that the pizz basses and cellos do come in before that point.

    Thanks for replying!

  9. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue.  When I open a file and play it, the first time it plays there's a glitch in the cellos and/or basses at measure 69 (the work is in progress and I am up to around measure 130 or so).  But if I go back and play just those measures or the entire sequence, it plays fine for the entire session.

I've done a check on my hardware in terms of how well it's able to handle audio and everything looks good.  Though I've been managing a studio for nearly 40 years, I'm really stumped as to what causes this.   My DAW is connected to one other machine that is dedicated to the Vienna Symphonic Orchestral Cube.

    DAW:

Windows 10, i7 CPU, 32 GB RAM, 2 SSD drives

    2nd Computer:

Windows 10, i7 CPU, 32 GB RAM, 3 SSD drives

The two computers are connected via ADAT, each machine has a dedicated sound car, the DAW has an RME UFX II and the 2nd computer has a MOTU  LP32.  I've tried changing the audio buffers from 512 to 1024 but that doesn't resolve it.

These are dedicated computers, used for nothing but music production.

I really don't know if this is an audio glitch or a MIDI glitch.  It sounds like a note gets cut off and I hear a little short "pop".  As I said, this only happens once, when I playback the file the first time after I turn the computer on and begin work.

I could try reinstalling the samples of those instruments, but if the sample file(s) got corrupted, I'd think they'd not play back correctly every time.

Any thoughts from what might be causing this?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

I enjoyed them both @Jerry Gerber, I did find the second one "The 4th Movement" sounded louder than the first "The 2nd Movement"

Both very enjoyable listening, mix sounds good here with plenty of separation in the voicing.

    Hi Wookiee,

Well, that's to be expected as they are on different albums and each album was mastered without considering how the previous album was mastered.  They're not part of the same symphony..

Thanks for listening and for the kind words!

hi Jerry - thought the music was cool, but those pictures were simply stunning - makes you realise how many Galaxies and Stars etc are out there - surely there must be another "earth" somewhere - hopefully a little more sane than our earth?

    cool stuff

It's currently believed by astronomers that there are up to 2 trillion galaxies in the universe, each galaxy containing hundreds of billions of stars.   Estimates are that there are billions of planets in our galaxy alone.  Maybe one day we will discover intelligent life in the cosmos.  We aren't finding much of it on our world, sadly...
