Ctrl + Home sends you to the beginning of the project. RTZ (W) sends you to where you parked your Now Time. Two different things.

Forgive me for trying to illustrate my point with some outlandish discussion. . . .

Hey everybody, I just found some wonderful new software that does everything I always wanted. The only drawback is that it doesn’t follow the usual windows conventions. The X to close a window is now located in the middle of the bottom margin of the frame. Oh, and to make the speakers work you have to click and drag the orange duck from the right side to the lower left side of the screen. And, although the software is free you need to buy a $200 thingamajig that includes a whatchamacallit to make it seem more familiar. . . .

My apologies. Sure Cakewalk is feature rich and a wonderful piece of work. If it wasn’t I wouldn’t be using it (since the DOS days, although I did set it aside for about 25 years).  People who have been using computers for a long time come to expect things to work in a certain way and when they don’t follow the usual pattern, it becomes very frustrating. The program could be much more pleasing to use if they hired a good interface designer, or as I am suggesting, provide us with the ability to fix it ourselves.  And while I’m at it, it would be helpful if they would scrap all the old Sonar documentation that is no longer relevant or even correct.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Have you tried the "Custom Module" ?
there  is a reason i put in a request for it (5 years ago) and cakewalk came through for me. You can link all these buttons to just about any commend available.

Yes I have, but 9 buttons is not enough for me. For example, almost every VCR transport button set has a "Go to beginning" button. Cakewalk has one but it is a little tiny button under the big one where it should be. I want to customize that set and set it up the way it should be. I also want to set up a set of zoom buttons similar to audacity. In essence I want to be able to create my own toolbar that sits under the standard one and spans across the entire console.

    Thanks for your interest.

Surprised to find out that WordPerfect still exists. O.o

Yes, that is exactly what I am hoping for. WP was and still is the best word processor on the market largely because of features like this. Come on bandlab. You can do better.

    Hi dwf2008,

Unfortunately, the Custom module in the Control Bar is all you get to customize commands.

    Kind regards,

    tecknot

Tecknot, yes that is my point and why I requested a better system for customizing. I keep hoping it will get better.

One thing I notice is that neither of the MIDI tracks are assigned to a MIDI channel. When I put the first track on channel 1 and the second track on channel 2, both faders work the way they are supposed to.

B   Bank number for patch changes in multi-timbre instruments
P   Patch number in the bank.

These all appear in the Inspector as well, just laid out differently.

More than a year to give an answer.

I would hate to be in a chat room with you. 😜

Kurre, for some reason the forum is NOT notifying me when there is a reply to my posts.  I just discovered there were replies the other night.

  6. Thank you reginald. I guessed it was something to do with the metronome being converted to audio.  To answer your question, my end goal is to get midi tracks , audio tracks, and a click track to all sync up together and have their tempo be easily adjustable via the project tempo setting. I have read several posts and docs about how to do this but so far the trick has eluded me. If you know an easy way (groove?) to do this could you attempt to explain it to me in kindergarten terms? I would really appreciate it.  I do know how to timestretch audio by dragging the end of the selection, but that is about as far as I’ve gotten. Again, thanks.

  7. Hi there. I started with an empty project and OPENED a midi file. As expected the midi will follow the tempo setting provided in the timing window of the toolbar. I then created a click track using the technique outlined here.

    https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/topic/1741-recording-the-metronome

This worked OK and the new metronome track syncs up well with the midi tracks. HOWEVER, if I change the tempo, the midi tracks behave properly but the Metronome track actually changes the number of measures and no longer matches the midi tracks. What gives?

  8. Thank you. But sorry no, this is not what I want. I would like to create a full blown toolbar with a couple dozen buttons with icons similar to what Sonar used to offer.

  9. The old Cakewalk 3 had a feature where you could mark the beats in an audio file and then adjust the measures to match the beats, sort of like a reverse quantize. Is this possible in the current version? I have read the instructions here Cakewalk - Knowledge Base - Finding the Tempo of an Audio Clip,  but this technique can be difficult if the audio track is long or doesn't start exactly on the downbeat, etc.

    Thanks

  10. I would very much like the ability to create custom toolbars similar to that provided by WordPerfect. Start with a blank toolbar and add my own buttons. These could be standard buttons or custom buttons created by me to run macros built by me. The toolbar would be dockable near the top of the screen under the main menu. Some buttons I would include would be :

    Zoom to project limits

    Zoom to selection

    Zoom In

    Zoom Out

    Cut/Copy/ Paste

    Delete & Drop Hole

    Add/Delete Markers

    Set punch  in/out

    Save

    Export

    Normalize

    Open various Views Etc.

I know some of these are already available on various parts of the screen, but they are scattered and not very well positioned for easy access. I also know there is a limited ability to create a toolbar/toolbox but it is limited to 9 buttons and is not very attractive.

    Thanks

OKNigel, I expanded the tracks but they only show the first 2 dropdowns. To see all 5 I had to switch the workspace to Advanced. I tried to modify the Basic workspace to show all 5 but couldn’t find the right setting. Is this possible?

After setting the midi channel it works as it should except . . . When playback is started, it reverts to the original volume until I click on the fader. Then it switches to the fader setting.  This seems like a bug?

If you look at the event view you will see the events on track 1 are on channel 1 and the events on track 2 are on channel 7.  Does cakewalk ignore these settings? How do I set a track to a specific channel?

    And thanks for your help.

  13. I created a midi file by exporting a score from Musescore3.  After loading it into cakewalk I had 2 tracks, one for lead guitar on channel 1 and one for rhythm guitar on channel 7. I set each track to  output to my Kurzweil PC3 keyboard. Then opened the Event View for each track and deleted all events that were not on the channel for the track. Then set the patch in the event view for each track. Everything seems to work and play OK except both track faders only operate track 1. How can I get the track 2 fader to work on  track 2? The midi file is attached. Thank you for any help.

  14. I tried several times tonight to open the piano roll view to edit some midi data. Each time the view tab indicated I had a multi-track view. This seemed to be the case regardless of how many tracks were selected at the time. How can I get it open with just one specific track, and, if it IS showing multi tracks, how can I tell which tracks it is showing?

    Thanks

  15. There seems to be a nexus between selecting a track vs a clip that I don’t understand. Please help. I wanted to copy some midi data from track 3 to track 1, all 3 tracks have just 1 clip. I drag across the data that I want to copy from track 3 to select it and then ctrl+c. I then click on the track number of track 1 to select it and press ctrl+v to paste. The data ends up pasted to track 2 not track 1. I did this several times with the same result and then noticed the track name was highlighted on track 2.  So I highlighted the track name for track 1 and it worked as I wanted. So, can someone kindly explain the difference between selecting via the track number vs selecting via the track name?

    Thanks

  16. Sometimes I manage to start cakewalk before I turn on the usb interface or the keyboard, synth, etc. When this happens cakewalk automatically remaps the tracks to other instruments that are turned on and available. This is a pain because I then have to go track by track and reset all the midi ins and outs, and patches etc. It does this even if I close cakewalk without saving, turn on the required equipment, and then restart it. So my question is: Is there a setting somewhere to stop this behavior? Tell cakewalk to just leave things alone. If it can’t find the specified instrument, so be it. Just leave things alone! I’ve noticed that if I turn off the instrument before I close cakewalk it will ask me if I want to change the settings to an available instrument, but it does not give me this option at the beginning of the session.

To make the patches appear in the track browser, you need to set the MIDI track to a channel rather than setting it to "none".

Also, one thing to note that there is a bug pertaining to patch change events as displayed in the event list.  If the patch name is too long, then the name of the patch will not appear in the event list even though the patch event itself is present.  This bug is also present with the latest Cakewalk by Bandlab (including 2020.4 Build 151 ER)

I have reported this bug to the Bakers.

Thank you both. I am slowly getting it to work.

  18. I recently purchased a Kurzweil PC3 keyboard. It is connected to the computer via usb. I installed the instrument definition file (ins) and the patches and banks appear properly in the patch names list. They also appear properly in the insert bank/patch change dialog. However, they do not appear in the patch browser in the track inspector. How do I remedy this?

Also, what happened to the Event List view? I cannot find it anywhere in the menus. How do i find/edit/delete a patch change that was entered via the Insert dialog?

    - Select the clip

    - Alt+A to open the Audiosnap Palette, and click the Enable/Power button

    - Got to the dropdown next to Clip Follows Project, and select 'Auto stretch'

    - Click the Clip Follows Project button

    - The clip wll now follow changes in project tempo.

    This works. Thanks David.

  20. Say I start a new project and import an mp3 file to use as a model. How do I slow down the playback so I can learn the guitar parts? I tried adjusting the tempo in the transport section but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
