What you could try is run Process Monitor from Microsoft Sysinternals to see which process is accessing the network and to what address

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-au/sysinternals/

Maybe download Malwarebytes Free and do a full scan, just to rule out Malware

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Note:  Disabling Windows updates has always been a bad idea - but that's a discussion for another thread.

I ran task manager and it showed the process as system. That's ntoskrnl.exe. That's a kernel task involved with drivers. It looks like the system was reporting some driver errors I uncovered. I wasn't aware it did that in the background. I use windows defender on my DAW and ran that. No problems. I didn't disable updates, I disabled automatic updates. When an update is available I'm notified and I download and install when I'm ready.

  2. I have win10 Pro on my DAW and auto updates are disabled in the group policy editor and one drive is not installed. While I was working on a project yesterday I started to get some clicks and when I checked the performance monitor there was a lot of network traffic. The only service showing network activity was system. Looking at data usage in settings system shows 3.35 GB. Does anyone know what system is doing on the network? Are there any other settings I need to  change? Anything to do short of disabling the LAN?

  3. The controls are a bit different than the QC. That sounds like it could be the Direct Mix on the OC. Do you have input echo enabled when you're tracking? Input echo in CbB.

  4. I have a quad-capture. Taking the output from a speaker attenuator into the QC I can go from -inf up to 0.5 in CbB. At 0.5 it red-lines and sens is at12 o'clock and peak lights up on the QC. If I'm using an amp sim I like to be between -4 and 0 dB.

Yeah, but the point of someone developing an amp sim is to - well to simulate an amp

For the most part I agree with you. I like amp sims that behave like HW. However, I have a Roland VG-99 and it has a Marshall sim that you can crank without getting any noise. There's something to be said for that. I think there's room for different philosophies, but if something's modified it should be noted ...

  6. I have TH-U. My wife has been working at home during the pandemic so I've set up all my amps for silent recording. If I come out of the power amp TH-U is my go to for speaker sim/cab emulation. I can also get a lot of good sounds from their amps, but haven't been using the amps as much lately. I haven't tried Brainwork bx_rockrack V3, but I have PA's Overdrive Supreme 50 which I like, as well as the PT100, bx_bassdude, and bx_megasingle. S-Gear seems most like real HW to me. The way the controls work and the way the amps react to my playing they seem like HW amps. I use it a fair amount. I like Amplitube 5 as well, but it's a CPU hog, you'll want a more recent CPU/chipset for it. I like the Chicago amp in Guitar Rig 6 and they have a lot of nice fx. I keep S-Gear, TH-U, AT, and Guitar Rig up to date. I'll likely pick up more amps from PA and Nembrini as well. Compared to the price of getting a new amp, these emulations seem like a good deal.

The Type-C ports on laptops r usb c only, right?

I'm not sure what you mean. Type-C is a connector, there are also Type-A, Type-B, Mini-USB, Micro-USB, and so on. Normally the USB standard will be specified as well. My laptop says - 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type C. I got an adapter for mine but haven't used it yet. I use a MOTU M4 with my DAW - it has a USB-C port, but it's USB 2.0.

    m4_rear.png

    Under specs it says -

    Computer I/O - 1 x USB-C (compatible with USB Type A) 2.0 audio class compliant

  8. I'm an amateur and not as good as Kenny, but here are a few pieces that use MIDI gtr and guitar synths,

Drums are programmed and guitar is mic'd, everything else is MIDI gtr.

MIDI gtr, you rock gtr, and the bass guitar is modeled.

Bass, strings, and trumpet are Boss SY-300, pads are you rock gtr.

A couple pads are keyboard in the beginning, and arps are keyboard (a sustained note). Bass guitar, guitar, and harmonica are SY-1000,

That video is truly unbelievable. I mean. Really. I don't believe it. I think there has to be some studio trickery going on there. I didn't think you could hammer like he is doing in that video with any of these midi rigs.

I've been playing guitar synth for over thirty years and all the equipment I have works with hammer-ons and pull-offs. I started with a Roland GM-70 back in '87 or '88. I like synth sounds or I use modelling, say for bass guitar, so I've been using a VG-99 and now an SY-1000. For MIDI I often use a You Rock gtr.

So I followed the calibration process and things track MUCH MUCH better!

But I have two issues I don't know how to resolve.

    1. The high E string is triggering notes about an octave lower than it should. It was doing this right out of the box so it wasn't anything I change.

    2. No midi notes are sent to the pc for hammer-ons or pull-offs. that means every note has to be plucked which would greatly reduce the playability for me.

It's a hell of a lot closer than I expected it to get - I'll be curious to see if I can solve these issues...

Is 1 true when playing PCM sounds in the GR-55? If so that would indicate a problem with the Godin. Note that you have setting up the GK pickup (or piezos), setting up the PCM sounds in a patch, setting up MIDI, and if you're using vsts or software or external HW they have to be setup as well.

Hammer-ons and pull-offs work fine for me. Again, does it work with PCM models on the GR-55? When you start working with external MIDI equipment they need to be setup to work together. Do the bend ranges correspond?

FWIW my son recently got a BOSS SY 1000 and for him he says the tracking is 'amazing'.

The SY-1000 is more a successor to the VG-99. One of the synth models is a dynamic synth - it doesn't really track, it modifies the wave form of the guitar's strings signals. There is no real latency and it's very expressive. It can model the common analog wave forms. There is also an OSC model, but that can get some latency and demands clean playing. It also has the ability to do gtr2MIDI, but then you have the usual tracking issues.  I like the SY-1000.

  12. I use hex pickups; I have a Godin xtsa, ACS nylon, and a strat with a GK2A. I mostly use a Boss SY-1000 which is more like an analog synth, but it does have GTR2MIDI and I have a GR55 and a few other units. When you setup the guitar in the GR55 most people like the string sensitivity lower than what Roland recommends. Below 70% and IIRC mine may be around 30 - 40%. Palm muting is important. If you're not familiar with it vguitarforums.com is a good resource for all things VG, GR, SY related. Have fun.

  13. I set the laptop up in my home studio and the Boss SY-1000 works fine with the USB 3.2 gen 1 port (SY-1000 is USB 2). The MOTU MIDI express XT works with it as well. I noticed that the USB 2 spec has a couple revisions, it may be that some older units have problems due to the revs.

  14. That's interesting. Not many manufacturers are stepping up to USB 3; I wonder if they're they testing for compatibility? The QC is an old IF so, I'm not surprised there are compatibility problems.

  15. I got a new laptop, an MSI Crosshair 15. When I plugged a Roland Quad-Capture into the USB 3.2 gen 1 port the QC didn't like it. It's fine in the USB 2.0 port and that's no problem. I'm curious if anyone knows what the problem is using some USB 2.0 devices with 3.2 ports?

  16. I don't have an Axe-Fx, but if I understand the signal flow ...

In CbB Audio track 1 has a filter & 2 aux track sends. Aux 1 has MultiCp and GEQ & Aux 2 has Cab and PEQ. The track one sends will be pre and the track fader turned all the way down. This will be true for mix 1 and 2 as well. Create an aux track for the output of aux 1 and set the output of aux 2 to it as well - call it mix 1 and put T-match & chorus on it. Mix 1 has 2 aux track sends - aux 3 & 4, one has Synth and the other has Comp and their outputs go to another aux track - mix 2. Mix 2 has 2 aux track sends - aux 5 & 6 and each has a delay and their outputs go to  another aux track mix 3. Most reverbs have a mix control so I wouldn't bother with putting reverb on a parallel track so, mix 3 has Vol/Pan, Reverb, GEQ and Enhance. On the sends and outputs reduce the volume by 5 db or so.
