Man, I've had a bunch of conversations with 8Dio's CEO and she's been very passionate that prices for sample libraries need to come down.

But it's one thing to discuss ideas, it's a whole other level to see those ideas happen. It's an amazing time to be a musician who uses sample libraries. Yes, lowering prices for libraries makes them more accessible-- which is great,  IMO. It also can bring out enormous hostility from competitors in this business,  which I witnessed from the inside in this case.

My hope is that 8Dio's moves like this to dramatically reduce prices of premium sample libraries result in prices  coming down overall for sample libraries.  The market has become mature. It's still experiencing healthy growth,  but tighter margins will absolutely mean that some marginal players won't survive. It also means that paying back production costs of very niche libraries is going to take a longer period of time-- which was a giant part of why a couple of competitors launched a public smear / defamation campaign against 8Dio last year  -- and unsuccessfully tried to keep me from sharing what was going on (I actually didn't know the 8Dio's CEO until then).

Anyhow, even if this deal doesn't appeal to you, it does represent something major for the industry.

The first one to do this was Garritan with GPO.  Back in the Northern Sound Source days they banned EW since they gave him a hard time over it.  They failed to realize this was a starter type library and was around 4GB.  I still love GPO if you want to create something quick.

Most 8dio libraries were developed for Kontakt 5.  There's not much overhead.

The problem with orchestra libraries is it's hard to reinvent the wheel. People are into shiny and new.   It's hard to comp up with new ideas for Strats and Les Pauls.  Wind instruments don't have new innovations.   I find serious professionals don't go for shiny and new.

It's not the space which is the issue. It's the NI folders and files all over the place which are left even after installation and need to be removed manually.

Some people don't like iLok. I don't like NI. That's pretty much the state of things on my end.

Such as?   So far they delete those large libraries after installing which sucks since you have to archive after installed.  The last think I want to do when replacing a drive is to download all of those large files and some ISPs warn you about downloading to much.  I can reinstall all of my IK, VSL, non player Kontakt libraries without using the net.

Just use symbolic links and put everything that takes up a lot of space on an external hard drive. Easy peasy once you've set it up.

I've never had to do that with NI libraries.  You can add folders in Kontakt.  I've had them spread on 3 drives and no issues.  This is where Kontakt rules.

    Oomph! No PayPal? That sucks...

That's because cancelling a sub on PayPal is easier.  I wonder how many subs out there where people forget to cancel.   They even have apps to track your subs.

    That's a friggin killer price.

I got it on sale for $444.11 and thought that was a good price at the time.
I'm still making payments on it.  Too bad I can't credit the difference...
Oh the joys of software and virtual instruments!

Wonder if Eastwest feels they've milked out the premium wallets out there and are testing a volume vs pricing strategy (i.e. selling more for less).
If I had paid full price for this bundle I'd probably be enraged instead of slightly depressed...

They've done this for a long time as have many others.

The reason I've never upgraded is the size of the library.  Storage space isn't cheap and it's not real expensive either but I read that some avoid libraries because it means upgrading drives.  A libraries that is around 1TB is gonna soak you into at $200 reputable 2TB SSD drive.

…it won’t have VST2 support and everybody will be sad for the next 30 years.

Not me.  With REs and VST there's too many choices.

Not all DAWs are quick at scanning plugins.  With over 1000 combos of VST it takes awhile.  I can even make the quick loading Reaper come to a slight crawl.

Cubase 13 Pro crossgrade is still $209 at BestService .  Looks like a better deal now.  Wish Presonus announced this while the $20 BS coupons were still good.

One positive about the Yamaha take over is no longer needing a hardware dongle and license 3 machines.  To me licensing is the #1 choice in buying software.

  8. Meanwhile those of us loyal Image Line users live in fear our world will come tumbling down.

I always liked Studio One because it was easier for people to transition from another DAW.

89 € each. There are two 49 € Pianoteq expansion instruments that cover basically the same instruments. So, is it worth an extra 40 € times 2 for the MIDI that comes with the Toontrack VIs? Not too sure about that. I think I'll wait for a sale.

I view something like this as a money pit once you take out the player that offers midi.  I have plenty of these mallet libraries.

Yeah, I was searching for what "Lead Architect" even was, and there is absolutely no information on the PreSonus website about it (yet). As far as VSTis go, I do not find that video demo very appealing at all for some reason  (there are a bunch of similar VSTis not DAW-locked or requiring a subscription to use).

It did make me find an odd nugget right at the very beginning of the MSoundFactory tutorial video though (never watched it before). The second sentence in the video... "Most likely our last instrument..." It has been out 3+ years already and didn't know that.

They've been selling their own libraries for some time and no their are not any substitute for what you have.   Hopefully they don't get the bad idea of leaving out features labeled Pro  which only becomes a pro version providing you sub.  There's no shortage of perpetual DAWs out there.
