  1. Hi, Oyvind, This is a very cool epic progressive metal instrumental!πŸ‘ Great composition and arrangement, and all of the instrumentation and playing was really well done. Fantastic guitar tones and excellent guitar playing, and lots of cool, complex melodies with twists and turns to keep the listener's interest. You've also got a powerful sounding, clear and wide, modern metal mix that sounds perfect for the genre. Great work, powerful piece of music!πŸ˜€ Best Wishes, Bob
  2. garybrun Hi, Gary, How are you, my friend? Hope you're doing well! Thanks for checking this new test mix out for me, greatly appreciated!😊 Sorry I couldn't comment on your tip earlier, I was out and about and viewing the forum on my phone, so I couldn't reply at the time. Your bass mixing tip is very similar to what I do. I use extreme high and low pass filters on two different bass tracks, except I don't duplicate the tracks, I use two drastically different amp sims while recording the bass, and then add a bit crusher plugin to the higher frequency track to help it cut through the mix a little better, and then try to blend the two tracks together until it sounds in the ballpark. Thanks gain for listening and for your good input. I really like learning the tips and techniques that others here on the forum are using to achieve their high quality mixes! The old forum used to have a "Techniques" sub-forum dedicated to cool recording and mixing articles, tips and tricks, which I loved and visited quite often. I really wish they would consider adding a Techniques section here on the new forum.πŸ‘ Have a good one, Gary! Bob
  3. Lynn: Hi, Lynn, It's really great to hear from you, buddy! Hope you're having a great weekend! Big thanks for lending your good ears to this, and also for the very encouraging comments!😊 Yes, sir, unfortunately, other than changing strings on a couple of my guitars, I was away from playing and recording for quite a while. I've been slowing trying to make some time to get things going again, and I figured the new forum was a good kick in the pants to give me a fresh start. I always appreciate everyone's input, suggestions and ideas on my stuff! Thanks again for giving this new one a listen, and for your always good input and observations, I always look forward to your opinion and ideas on my stuff, and your songs are always top quality!πŸ‘ Have a Rockin' weekend, Lynn! Bob
  4. SPAK: Hi, Steve, Big thanks for giving this a listen, and also for your good input and kind comments!😊 I'm still struggling a bit on trying to get my "Studio Ears" back after a year and a half away from recording and mixing, so your input and observations are important to me and greatly appreciated. Especially due to the amazing quality of your posts here on the forum!πŸ‘ Thanks again, my friend, and have a great weekend! Bob
  5. James G: Hi, James, How are you, my friend? Hope you're doing great!😊 Thanks for checking out my first new recording and mix in quite a while, I really appreciate your input and comments! Your right on the money about the bass. After a quick 20 minute mix on this, right before I uploaded to Soundclick, I thought there was too much low end on the bass and pulled it back a bit, and it does mostly follow the guitar except for a couple of little runs. Because I mainly use my 5-string bass, sometimes the lows can get a bit out of hand. So, I record the bass to two tracks through two different amp sims, one for really deep lows, and one for clickety-clack low mids, and then eq each track separately. Then, I try to balance the levels using the two track faders to try to get the bass to fit comfortably with the low drop tuned guitars and the kick drum. It's always a bit of a balancing act, and it's always great to get some good ears like yours from the guys here on the forum to help me get it right. You've certainly saved me quite a few times!πŸ˜€ Thanks for your input, friendship and support, James, truly appreciated! Best Wishes, Bob
  6. SPAK: Hi, Steve, Thank you so much, I sincerely appreciate you taking time to check out the video for me, and also your very kind words of encouragement!πŸ˜€ Also, thanks for having a look at the "Carry Me" video and your comment. I try to do a couple of ballads every so often, and your recent ballad posts on this new forum are truly an inspiration, and the playing, singing and production are always top notch!πŸ‘ Thanks again, Steve, greatly appreciated! Best Wishes, Bob
  7. "Die Hard" (Rock) Hi again, guys! I just uploaded a Test Mix for a new song called "Die Hard". If you can spare a few moments to check it out, as always, any and all helpful comments, suggestions, constructive criticism, input and ideas are very welcome, and also greatly appreciated!πŸ˜€ Big thanks in advance for any observations, suggestions, comments and ideas!πŸ‘ Bob ==================================== EDIT: 4/2/19 Hi, Guys, I just uploaded Mix#3 with all the suggested fixes/changes, hopefully I'm getting this closer to where it should be. Sincere thanks to everybody who listened and offered input, suggestions and observations! That's what's going to make this place get back to the "Glory Days", like on the old forum!πŸ‘ Thanks again, and have a good one!πŸ˜€ Bob =================================== " Die Hard" https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13848982
  8. Hi, Steve, You've got a beautiful romantic ballad here with excellent writing and playing, and the heartfelt vocals were really outstanding!πŸ˜€ Great job on the well textured arrangement and the mix is clear, wide and totally pro sounding. Dynamite work, Steve, top notch all the way!πŸ‘ Have a good one, Bob
  9. Hi, Marke, Wow, this is an absolutely fantastic song!πŸ˜€ Well written and arranged, excellent playing on all the instrumental parts, and you wife's vocals were pure dynamite! I especially love all the guitar parts and fills, and the playing and guitar tones were outstanding. The modern sounding mix is crystal clear, punchy and totally pro sounding. The entire production sounds radio-ready to me!πŸ‘ Super stuff, Marke, thanks for sharing! Best wishes, Bob
  10. Hi, Gary, This is a really cool vintage blues rocker, well written and played, cool lyrics, and nice vocal work!πŸ˜€ I really like where this is headed and I love the keyboard parts. As Fogle622 mentioned above, I'd add a bluesy guitar solo and an organ solo to break things up a bit. Nice work, Gary, can't wait to hear the finished product!πŸ‘ Best wishes! Bob
  11. Hey, Rob, This second mix is really dynamite, much more energy and punch, and it really showcases your great playing!πŸ˜€ The new drum track is 1000% better than the first one! It really changed the whole dynamic of the song, and I think it could really work well as a cool instrumental, if you decided not to add vocals. You know I always love your killer vocals, but this is really sounding fantastic as it stands alone!πŸ‘ Super stuff, Bats! Have a good one, bro! Bob
  12. Mesh: Hey, Mesh! How are you, buddy? Hope you're doing great! It's really good to see another familiar face over here at the new place!πŸ‘ Big thanks for giving this one another listen for me, and also the very kind words! I always look forward to and greatly appreciate your input and comments on my stuff.πŸ˜€ I truly appreciate your friendship and support, brother, and I'm looking forward to hearing some of your tasty guitar work on your next collab with Bapu and the boys! Thanks again, Mesh and have a Rockin' week! Bob
  13. Hey, Ed, very nice, bro! As our famous elder statesman, John Lovitz's character from SNL used to say, "Yeah,... that's the ticket!"πŸ˜€ Sounds great now, buddy, have a good one!πŸ‘ Bob
  14. Wookiee: Hey, Wook, How are you, brother? Hope you're having a great weekend!πŸ‘ Thank you so much for having another look at this old video for me, and for the kind words! I truly appreciate your input, friendship and support, John!☺️ Looking forward to hearing something new from the furry paws soon!πŸ˜€ Have a good one, Wookster! Bob
  15. garybrun: Hi, Gary, How are you, my friend? Hope you're doing well! Thanks so much for checking the video out for me, and also for the encouraging comments!☺️ What you mentioned about musical styles was part of what made the old Songs forum so great! A wide variety of musical styles and genres, and sub-categories of each genre, was well represented, and the forum members all seemed to be able to listen closely and provide helpful comments and observations no matter what type of music was posted, even if it was something they didn't regularly listen to. In the long run, I think it's always great to get opinions and ideas from people who are into other types of music, and enjoy exploring the recording, mixing and production techniques used in types of music that I don't normally listen to. Hopefully, when things get a little busier here on the new forum, more of that will happen.πŸ‘ Your new post, "Just Be With You" is off to a fantastic start! Great guitar tones, excellent sounding drums, and the vocals and harmonies are really nice. I'm looking forward to hearing it when you get the bass tracked, it's going to be dynamite!πŸ˜€ Thanks again, Gary, I greatly appreciate you listening and commenting! Have a good one, my friend! Bob
  16. Byron Dickens: Hey, Byron, Thank you so much for checking out the video, and the kind words, greatly appreciated!πŸ˜€ Yes, sir, you're right about real drums being a blast to play, LOL, I just wish I could play them well enough to not embarrass myself in a live situation! 😁 At least in the studio with the electronic set I'm able to play the kick, snare and hats over and over again until I get something fairly close to what I'm hearing in my head, and then quantize the midi to iron out my horrible timing issues, and then add the fills, toms and cymbals after the fact. Being a guitar player, it's so much faster and easier for me to tap out drum parts with my fingers on a keyboard midi controller or drum pad controller than with the e-kit, but sometimes I end up with a real messy drum track. I'm just thankful that the guys on the old Songs forum were always so helpful with ideas on how to reign things in and fix up my drum tracks until things sound decent. The drums are always a struggle for me, but with this layered process, I just keep trying and trying until something clicks. Thanks again, Byron, I really appreciate your input and support! Have a good one! Bob
  17. Douglas Kirby: Hi, Douglas, Thanks so much for checking out the video for me, and also for your very encouraging comments! I truly appreciate you taking time to listen and comment, greatly appreciated!πŸ‘ On this song I used my PRS Paul Allender Signature Model, through my Line 6 Toneport UX2 and two POD Farm 2.59 bi-amped custom amp sim models that I heavily tweaked. One was based on a Diezel Herbert and the other was based on a Marshall J800. Because of time constraints, I usually only get a chance to record between 3 and 5 AM, so I very rarely mic up an amp anymore when I'm recording. I sure don't want to wake up the neighbors in the houses nearby!😁 Thanks again for giving it a listen, Douglas, and have a Rockin' weekend! Bob
  18. Hi, Gary, You've got a really great start on this very cool rocker!πŸ‘ Excellent guitar tones, great vocals and harmonies, and a nice clean, modern sounding mix. Can't wait to hear it when it's finished! That POD has some cool sounds and effects in it. A guitar player in one of my old cover bands used one on stage through a stand alone power amp and 2x12 Avatar speaker modeling cabinet for a while, and it sounded great. As per what Chuck mentioned, I actually never owned a POD, but I do use a Line 6 Toneport UX2 with POD Farm 2.59 and all the extension packs for almost all of my recording, and I have a couple of Line 6 stage amps and a Line 6 Variax guitar along with the Variax Workbench interface and software, so you can definitely call me a Line 6 fan!πŸ˜€ Anyway, great job on this so far, I'm looking forward to hearing it when it's done! Have a great weekend! Bob

Hey, Allan, Great to see you over here on the new forum!πŸ‘ This is a really cool song, well written and arranged, with excellent instrumental performances and fantastic vocals and harmonies. Bit of a grim subject matter, but it makes for a cool dark rocker with a matching vibe. Great stuff, Allan, have a good one!πŸ˜€ Bob
  20. Hey, Daryl, It's great to hear you and the current Mrs. G singing great together on this fun sounding pop rocker!πŸ˜€ Really well written with a clever lyrical story, excellent playing by everyone as always, and terrific vocals and a bouncy vibe. I really like the cool little clean guitar fills that fly in from the sides during the chorus, and the bridge before the break was cool going into the third chorus with the great distorted guitar fills. I think the whistling added a lively bit of merriment to the overall feel of the song. My only very minor nits, (sorry to be a nitpicker!πŸ˜€), are that at 2:28 right before the break, and at 3:42, the very last note of the song, either the bass note which should be a "G" is sharp in those two spots, or more likely the floor tom drum hit is out of tune and creating a "sour note" when combining with the bass. I listened all the way through three times, and those two spots distracted me all three times. Although, it's perfectly okay in the beginning at the :13 second mark where there's no floor tom. Anyway, Daryl, it's always fantastic to hear another great song from everyone in The Forum Monkeys, and Ed did a super job on the mix!πŸ‘ Nice work everybody, and have a great weekend! Bob
  21. Hi, John, I'm another Rode guy and I really like my Rode NT2A.πŸ‘ It's got switchable multiple polar patterns, a 3-way HPF, 3 position PAD, and came with a nice shock-mount, pop filter, wind screen and carrying case. It's heavy and solid, exceptionally well built and very reasonably priced, too, with a 10 year warranty. I think the versatility makes it a really great mic, especially for the price. Have a good one! Bob
  22. daryl1968: Hey, Daryl, How are you, buddy? Great to see you on the new forum!πŸ‘ Thanks so much for having another look at this video for me. I always greatly appreciate your input, suggestions and support on my stuff, and value your friendship highly!πŸ˜‰ Hope you and the lovely Mrs. are cranking out some new Staypress material, I always look forward to your cool posts, and the quality is always top notch! Thanks again, and have a great night! Bob
  23. thegaltieribrothers: Hey, Paul, How are you, my friend? Hope you're doing great! it's nice to see another familiar face on the new forum!πŸ™‚ Thank you so much for checking this video out, and for the very encouraging comments! I truly appreciate your input and observations on my stuff! I'm hoping to have a test mix of something brand new to post very soon. The new heartfelt Pop Ballad, "Liar" that you recently posted is really excellent, fantastic work!πŸ‘ Thanks again, Paul, much appreciated! Bob
  24. Hi, Very interesting take on a stylistic cover of a much loved classic. I definitely get a mid 80's style electronica vibe from using keys and synths instead of the original instrumentation, and the music seems to work well as a scaled down version. James had some excellent observations and advice about the vocals in the post above. I think with a little more practice and a bit more confidence and attitude when you record the vocals, you can definitely take this up to another level.πŸ‘ Keep up the good work, my friend! Bob
  25. Hey, Rob, Really cool start to what's going to definitely be a killer song!πŸ™‚ It's a little different than your usual stuff, but it's got your signature sound and great playing, and there are lots of interesting melodies and elements flowing in and out on this one for sure. It works pretty well as a stand alone instrumental, but I can't wait to hear it when you drop in your dynamite vocals!πŸ‘ Cool stuff, Bats, good to see you over here at the new hangout! Have a good one, brother! Bob
