I use instrument tracks almost exclusively.

Even if a VSTi is multi-timbral, I'll usually opt for having separate instrument tracks and accept the overhead of having more than once instance of the VSTi running.

    My reasons are:

    • I can easily swap out one synth for another on a per track basis
    •  I only have to worry about one track instead of two and I can freeze them separately if needed.

    Are you me in disguise?

  2. You can just direct the midi tracks output to the soft synth question, but as to whether it's quicker than a copy/paste to an instrument track, I'm not sure.

Personally though if the midi is going to end up driving a soft synth I prefer to record it using that soft synth as things like velocity, note length,  modulation etc will sound different.

Dragging the audio clip to a midi track used to work like a charm, but for me, 9 out of 10 times Cakewalk/Sonar crashes.  A safer bet is to right click on the audio clip and create a Region FX, and then drag the audio clip to the midi track. That has worked for me, every time.

    Works fine for me.

Yes.  I think it has to do with how Melodyne interprets the pitch and breaks it into blobs.

For example, if you split a blob into several segments you'll see these new  blobs readjust to different pitches.  Make some adjustments and then render.  If you re-open that clip in Melodyne it will reanalyze the note pitches and the blobs well look different but the audio will sound the same.  I see this all the time because when I edit in Melodyne I typically will split a blob into several pieces and make my corrections more surgical.

Thanks for replying. I do split the notes up too, I just figured that once spilt, moved and rendered that they would stay where they were. As you say the sound is ok, just the display looks off.

If I live to be 100 it still won't feel right to call them blobs. ?

  5. A long overdue section IMO.  Good to see.

Still miss PC Hardware, PC Software and Techniques tho…

I guess that "Instruments & Effects" could be the new Software section if people choose to use it that way.

I suspect that Hardware and Techniques were dropped because of relatively low traffic, but Techniques was often interesting to read even if you had nothing to add to the discussion and was also generally far more civil and drama free than the main forum. Even though I rarely visited the hardware section I think it's important to have as not all problems are to do with software and where else is anyone supposed to ask those questions?

paulo,  shouldn't your name start with a capital P? Methinks thou art a 'legless' man, and not equipt to pass critique.

My low sense of self esteem will not allow me to capitalise something that serves only as a  reference to myself.

I see you are also a fan of ye olde English words - how queynte.

Mighty pendantic coming from someone who doesn't even capitalize his name! ?

(Me?  I don't care any more.  LOL!)

See the first words of my statement.

That said, I can at least spell pedantic.?

But you probably did that on purpose to show much you don't care, right? ?

  8. I've done it and not noticed anything that stands out in a mix.

In a related subject - has anyone ever corrected the pitch of something in melodyne,  bounced to clip and then later re-opened the same clip in melodyne and found that the corrected notes are displayed as still  being some way off pitch?
