I'm confused....the installers are downloaded to your "Downloads" folder and you can put them on a flash drive and take them
    wherever you want.

Yes, if you want to use the Product Portal. But I hate it 😜 (takes much longer, takes the computer hostage, does not support to define a download folder, does not show the update number and changelog ...). These are the reasons why I prefer to download straight from the iZotope homepage!

Oh, I forgot there is another important reason: I don't want to install everything on my weak laptop just for download purpose!

It seems to retain the quality if you don't have to do much stretching/shrinking.

It's the same with AudioSnap, it uses stretching/shrinking, too. Thus, the result fairly depends on the algorithm (stretch method) that you have chosen for the track´s Offline Render! I prefer the different Radius algorithms (depending on the source), they are superb (only available in Sonar/CbB)!

These days I tend to just split the audio

Though I use AudioSnap a lot, in some cases I use the same method as you do. Especially if there would be too much stretching/shrinking involved. Sometimes if I have to shorten a long note a lot, then I don't use xfades, but I cut out the note in the middle and align the waveform with the biggest zoom, so that the waveform continues in a harmonic way. Works great!

Maybe it’s because I am trying to snap distorted guitars? The transients rarely land right on the beat and I know my timing isn’t that bad lol.

How do you guys normally time guitars?

Except for instruments like piano, for most instruments the transients are very difficult to find. Very often there are several places where a note/hit could have its transient and depending which one you choose it sounds completely different. With guitars, winds and vocals it's especially challenging! Guitar transients can be at the pick/finger click, but also at the real tone start or somewhere in between. And this varies often in the same playing whether rhythm or lead, but it is usually a recognizable pattern.

That's why DAWs and other programs (like Melodyne) very often fail to find the transient "felt" by the musician! This can be proved, if you take the same audio clip and let several programs find the transients. You will be surprised how different the results will be!

That's the reason why I check through all the transients manually and most of them won't be placed at the DAWs propositions! Then there is also the swing feel of the musician that plays in. Usually I try to find out what was the intention, before I quantize the transients to this feel, i.e not to the exact grid (in Reaper this is easier, because you can define a swing into the grid, but in Sonar I do this manually).

By the way, because of the poor automatic transient detection I don't think it will be realistic with a lot of A.I. ideas in the near future! 😄

  4. Me too, I like the take lane concept of Sonar/CbB!

But some days ago I found another bug: If you enable several takes at the same time position (e.g. to create a double), then the merged audio is displayed in the track as it should. But as soon as you close the lanes it only shows the output of one single lane!

Though I identified this bug recently, I found out that it was already present in Sonar Platinum! In the last years the Bakers have surely sorted out a couple of bugs in take lanes, regrettably some are still left.

  5. Just another vender that downgrades authorization and makes customers more dependent! Sad, sad, sad, ... said! 😞

Well, I'm lucky that I have almost nothing from Steinberg, except the heritage of their goofy VST3 definition!

    Not a problem here.

My only gripe about online installation/registration is that there seems to be a trend with install/update managers (Native Access, looking at you) not to store username or password. So every time I want to check for updates I have to enter them again. I. do. not. like. this.

I guess it's to deter people from installing the softwareses on their friends' systems. Protection of the (intellectual) property at the cost of inconveniencing the honest.

I can accept that they want to protect their products, but still they could provide an offline installation + activation (as many do)!

But lately I've spent most of my money with plugin providers that support user-friendly activation (none/offline key/offline file). And I will be going on to give them my preference! It's not only better for users with offline systems, but it's also much easier to migrate the system/hardware! 😉

Kontakt-aware peeplz: did NI change the licensing for Player instruments recently? Because I'm starting to see a LOT more Player-compatible instruments for free. It used to be that the creator of any Player-compatible instrument had to cough up a fee to NI for doing so. Has that been relaxed?

Yeah, I have the same impression!

But if you are using an offline computer, then this is sad news! Player installation => online! 😞

Drop the oversampling down to 1x (top right) it's 4x  by default.

Thanks! I had seen the default and changed it, but doing the test I forgot to do it again.

But still it is 5 times the cpu consumption of the former version! But I agree it's more acceptable.

  9. Though I like that they updated these products, I have to mention those aspects:

    • The plugins are now about 10 times the old size. I hope this has no effect to the performance, because I liked that the Nomad plugins have been very light on resource consumption.
    • Nowadays online documentations drive me crazy! I prefer pdf documents, that's why I investigated a lot of time to convert online manuals to pdf. But there are so many obstacles! And their online manual creates new problems! It seems the future is more and more regress IMHO (somehow back to stoneage)!
    • The new looks are somehow unemotional compared to their predecessors, but YMMV.
    • Positive: I really like that it is now possible to input values (double click)! This is sometimes much easier than screw with the mouse!

I personally would never go back to using an antique.

Well, this reminds me of cars, furnitures and houses! It seems I really love antique things! 😄

  11. This look reminds me of the Reaper Echolot theme! 😆 It is also an imitation of the Sonar Platinum look!

It may be an "installer helper." Even Softube now installs a service for this purpose. I mean, c'mon, a service? And then leave it running?

I've stopped NTKDaemon and switched its start up to Manual. No ill effects, NI just starts it up when it needs it.

At least it looks as if they no longer install those multiple services that go with their controllers. Every update, I used to have to go into Services and disable those damn things.

This is exactly the reason why I hate Install Managers (NA...)! 😆

Furthermore this is why I like full Kontakt libraries! With them I skip to use NA. I rarely use NA and that's fine, avoids a lot of trouble! Most of the updates are anyway of no avail to me, they just consume time and sometimes only introduce new problems! 😉

I think this is what Softube call a “feature”. I love Amproom but it’s the WORST in terms of load time, CPU hit, etc.

As far as I can see it's only the loading and changes in the GUI that are stressing the CPU, for the rest I see it's lighter than most other channel strips (checked in Reaper where you can see the CPU hit for each plugin alone). Generally I have the impression that the GUI loading of Softube plugins has worsened in the last couple of years! I'm quite sure that it's caused by a "modern" GUI library!
